I've been an RN for 16 years. I've worked as a nurse practitioner, in the community, medical, primary health, aged care, prison health and CCU. Thing is, I really feel it's time for a career change. I've spent half my working life nursing, I want to spend the remainder doing something different. Not to mention it's all come to ahead recently after years of stress on my back, it's finally had enough!

I'm just looking for ideas really. Unfortunately money is a bit of an issue so if I were to study again I couldn't do long courses.

Has anyone been in the same boat?

Hi Rachelm0

I'm sure I read something on whirlpool forums of a woman whose Son-in-law was an ex nurse and found a job in insurance doing health claims. His nursing knowledge was of great assistance there.

It might also be worth looking at a position as a Radiography-assistant ( salary nothing like a nurse practitioner) but a lot less hassle and non-nursing but still medical.

Are there any OHS jobs you could do or Teachers Assistant?

best wishes for the future,

Doug

Using your great experience to work as a nursing teacher/professor might be a great option.  You could also probably do a lot of medical writing if that's interesting for you.  A lot of it depends on you and what you'd like to do!  Have you done a career survey or a survey of your interests/personality?  That might also help give you some direction. Good luck!

Hi doug_mmm and KennethClowed, I have recently seen a job in health insurance claims, these are few and far between and quite competitive from what I have experienced. Though this would be of interest to me.

I have been a nurse teacher in the past. Not sure the unpaid prep time and unwillingness of some students is for me.

Have been looking recently into going back into study again, maybe to retrain in another area.

Hi Rachelm0,

Can I suggest you look at 'whirlpool forums' , search the forums on 'nursing' and you'll find some people's experiences and lively debate about pros cons want to do/is it worth doing/want out of nursing. Might get some tips there. Since nursing involves a lot of patient care/communication/attention to detail might I suggest some kind of Customer Service officer position ( yeah I know poor salary but it's a sideways move and foot in the door of a large organisation might open up to new opportunities. I worked in such a position and it was poorly paid and lets say trying sometimes BUT a useful experience in retrospect. Huge salary cut from Nursing Practitioner though but $$$ isn't everything. I take it you've covered the medical sales rep possibilities? From what I see they oft request those with nursing background. Other thing Rachel is I'm just starting nursing the reason I've got the ideas on these things is from reading the whirlpool forums, job posts trying to get a feel for things. I'm no seasoned pro in this environment. Best wishes, Doug
