Hi all,

Mid next year I will be commencing a full time traineeship with Ballarat health services to gain a Diploma of Nursing and be placed in full time employment at the end of it (provided I gain entry to the course) I will be 45 years old at that stage and it will be a complete career change as I have been involved in the printing industry all my working life. My question is: How are male nurses generally received and are there many people, male or female that have made the switch to nursing at a similar age and how has that worked out for you?

Congratulations on such a great career change in nursing.  Males are definitely welcomed into the nursing field because they are able to lift patients and carry lots of things and do many more things.  Female nurses like having male nurses who are on their team because they bring a great insight to the medical team and the medical nursing profession.  I have had male nurses before and they were outstanding in my eyes.  They were so nice to me and caring.  You are making a great choice in becoming a nurse.  I wish you the best.  Good luck to you.

When my mom was in the rehab center, she had lots and lots of nursing staff, but what was amazing to me was the fact that there were a lot of male CNA's.  I saw a lot of women there as RN's and one man as an LPN.  The male CNA's were the best because they can lift patients of all sizes, can do multiple tasking, and they can do other assigned tasks.  Male nurses are becoming more and more into the healthcare system of the 21st century because males enjoy this healthcare profession.  I congratulate you on your nursing career.  I wish you the best.
