Liberals plan to ease nurse shortage
ABC NewsOnline Nov 20, 2005
The South Australian Opposition has announced an election policy which it says will address the state's nursing shortage.
Opposition Leader Rob Kerin says a series of Liberal Party initiatives would bolster the number of nurses working within public hospitals.
If they win office next March, the Liberals say they will provide training for an extra 100 nurses a year.
Mr Kerin says a Liberal government would also allow second and third year registered nurses to work inside wards.
He says the State Government has failed to put more nurses on the ground over the past three years.
"The other thing is they've gone overseas to get nurses," he said.
"There are a lot of young South Australians who would be extremely capable and great for our system.
"We need to encourage them and our plans will encourage them and put more of them into our hospital system."
