Dear all,Thanks for giving a newbie the opportunity to post a message (first time).
I am hoping you kind folk can point me in the right direction.
I'm 43, married with 3 adorable kids, and looking to venture into nursing, which I have wanted to do for quite some time.
I would like to do a Diploma of Nursing but do it so that I can continue to work full time.
My circumstances:I live in Melbourne.I am currently in IT and work full time.I need to keep working full time.
Years ago I did a degree in teaching (1993)
My funds are limited to pay an entire 15 or so thousand dollars up front for the entire diploma.
I'm hoping there is a way for someone like me to do a diploma and pay as you go eg.subject by subject.Any help greatly appreciated.Simon

Hello Simon,

I completed Diploma of Nursing @ VU in Melbourne there is VET-FEE help available which is simular to HECS but for the victorian TAFE sector any questions inbox me

Thanks so much for your kind response.

Ive read a little about the VET-FEE help and I'm starting to get a little more positive that I might be able to do the course, and defer payment until I earn a certain amount, even though I have done a degree 20 years ago and since aid that hecs back).

Did you find the VU course good ozguy? I'm researching now for places to do it. Do you have any advice with regards to what to look for in a place that offers it?

IMHO I believe attending a big institution is more beneficial e.g. VU, RMIT as they have connections when it comes to placements compared to smaller organisations eg careers australia, partners in training which have a bad reputation in the industry. Furthermore if you decide to do your RN which I am and have a leg up on my counterparts that went to these substanderd organisations. I have no regrets doing my Diploma at VU and would urge you to do so at a larger institution they have so much support eg essay writing, referencing, mathematics support and library with huge collection of text books and online resources.  all the best

what ever you  do use a proper training organisation like rmit or the ANF ( Vic branch) as these private ones are only after your money , not really interested in teaching you and take forever to give you your certificate and up load it to APR HA  I spent two years travelling backwards and forwards to melb one day a week with Partners in Training Australia. they are hopeless, they don't give work back, no feed back, treat you like little children. cant organise good placements if they organise it at all. alot of work had to be done at home and alot of their referances were out of date, so you had to find it yourself and teach your self. don't be fooled one day a week at school is not enough to learn it. then when you do finally get to go to work you find out that they have forgot to teach you things. my advice would be to enroll in Charles Sturt Uni distant ed and do Div 1. Especially if you already have  degree. they are really supportive, everything is online and residential schools twice a year and placement close to home. if i had known that i would have done batchelor of nursing rather than diploma. cheers j.c

Thanks so much again for your kind responses.

Guys Im looking at doing the diploma at Health Skills Australia, and wondering if you have heard any feedback about these guys and whether they are reputable?

If you do it there, you get one years credit to Deakin University if you wish to do the degree in Nursing.

Jalaac, I looked at trying to do the degree on nursing at CSU but the person there said in order to do the degree in nursing through them via distance, you need to have done the equivalent of first year of the degree eg.the diploma of nursing.

shame about csu. thought they were more negotiable than that. still think you would be better to do degree at a uni in melb as some of them do distant ed. as you already have a degree then you shouldnt have to do everything. either way you still have to do placement, which is not negotiable they tell you were you are going. i have heard that Homesglen or Box hill tafe are good for Diploma and that VU is terrible as we had students come from VU into our class and they were saying Partners in training was better than VU. which is a really poor reflection on Victoria UNI when a slack private training organistion was better and it was terrible. The ANF vic branch in elizabeth st run a partime course. the other place that does it distant ed is gold coast uni in QLD you could look at that. OR charles darwin uni in darwin you can do one subject at a time. there are lots of options . MR google is a wealth of information. cheers. :)
