Hi all,

Im considering a career change to nursing ( enrolled). I'll be in my fifties, anyone out there in that age bracket who can give me some advice?

How did you find the study?

Did you feel out of place amongst the other students?

Any 'late starters' give any experiences on transitioning to the employment situation? Was work easy to find?

Any advice/experiences thankfully received.

Tell it as you see it.

best wishes, Doug

Never to old to learn. In my afternoon class, there are several 50+ people, one male, and many 40+. The young ones are the exception.

Day class is a tad diffreent, but still several late 30's and 40+ people, but I only attend one day class per week, on orientation day there were many more 50+ people, more female, but several males!

Hi LuckyAussieMum,

Thanks for your reply, your points are very encouraging and interesting. Some would argue that if I'm bothered by the age I can't be that keen. :-( Just want to know the perceptions out there. Thanks again for your reply L.A.M. best wishes Doug

Hi dougmmm, I'm 51 and just finished my 1st semester which they say is the hardest. From a group of 30 we have 14 students left. Most of the dropouts were young apart from 2. One of the students was 60. Good luck with it.

Chrispil58

and thank you too Chrispil58, it's good to have such encouragement. Im thinking of doing it part time as for financial reasons I doubt our family would survive 18 months without my income. Looking forward to trying to get in and taking it on.

I'm glad I'm not the only older person looking at the career change (or an actual career instead of crap work). I'm 44 so by the time I'm finished I'll be 46. Freaks me out no end but am just taking it one day at a time. I'm studying full time and after my first placement I will apply for work as a PCA (apparently we are qualified at cert III level at that time). Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm 48 and finished mid last year.  Went straight into a grad program at the hospital I had done most of my prac at.  I did my course online at TAFE on the Gold Coast and we also had 3 residential schools we had to attend.  We had a lot of over 40 in my group.  I didn't feel out of place at all.   As I did it online it was great as I could do it in my own time and still worked part time.  1st semester was the hardest - easing back into study etc.

Hey Lainey and Sweets_au,

Thanks very much for your replies, appreciated. They are very encouraging.

I'm looking to do the part-time Diploma in Jan/Feb next year at Central Tafe Perth. :-)

Great feedback. Keep in touch.:-)
