Hi there. I am new to this forum and wondered if anyone could shed some light on things for me.

I want to apply for my Div 2 course while currently working in the community as a P.C.A. I have a few places in mind such as Box Hill Tafe, Chisholm, Health Skills (though i would prolly have to do a traineeship to be able to afford it) and i sent an application to Health Train around 2 weeks ago.

I wondered if anyone else has done their Div 2 course through Health Train as that is the one i am really looking into and if so, how long did it take to get a reply to your application?? They have no course dates on their site so i took the chance and just sent one in. Would anyone know the dates for the Div 2 course there?

The one thing that bugs me about Tafe is the entry tests and more so the fees as i am not sure i am eligible for government funding, and not all places have it. It's very expensive otherwise.

Any info anyone could give here about Health Train would be wonderful. I am a little worried as 2 weeks seems a long time to not have any reply from them to my application.

Thanks to all in advance,

Kate.

hi! i did my training at chisholm and it cost me 1900$ including books

(the course is subsidised from the government, whilst private instituions aren't such as health train and health skills) and the vetassess test

(concession was ~$800), whilst on clinicals i talked to PCAs who were wishiing to do their Div 2 through halth train and they said it was costing them $7000!

the vetassess test wasn't too bad actually i thought it would be alot worse and they give you paper which helps you study for the exam.

chisholm tho were very fast in the inital application (1 week) but my acceptance letter into the course i recieved mine 3 weeks before the start of term.

Hi Finah.

Thanks for replying. I was going to apply at Chisholm but i have missed the intake and will have to wait till next year to get in for July if i don't get in anywhere else. I know Health Skills is not government funded but if you get a traineeship through them it's very cheap. And Health Train who i have also applied to are Government funded so that's good.

Can i ask you about the Vetassess test. Do they give you an example question to show you the workings out or do they go straight into the question without any examples? What are the medication questions like? I just need to know what to study. I have been doing the sample test from the Vetassess website but theres not really anything on it to do with Medication.

Hi Katie , health train is govt funded. I am a current student with them and love it. They do a couple of intakes a year. How health train works is they have an information evening which is compulsory , where they will explain what the course involves etc.. what they expect of you and all that and then you sit an 'entrance exam' like the vetassess on the same night. Then if you pass that they will contact you for an interview and then you wait a few weeks and find out if you got in or not. If you are unsure about when the next info night is just give them a call and ask. The thing that appealed to me about health train was the fact their courses are part time.... (2 days a week) .. which is great for me, as i can still work part time around my study commitments.

Hi Alli. I rang Health Train today and they are sending me some info out about their next info session which is October. So hopefully i will get accepted for next year as i would like to go through them if i am able too.

What is the Health Train test like? Is it like the Vetassess one?? Unfortunately Health Train don't accept Vetassess results through another trainer ( i asked them today) so i need to sit the test twice, once through Health Skills to try and get in there and the other through Health Train. It will increase my chances i suppose.

Hi Alli.

If you read this, could you let me know what you paid all up approx for the Health Train course? I got the info from them today and was a little taken aback due to the fact that materials alone would be $700 on top of the $800 approx through the funding. Then i find also enclosed, a leaflet to say that a pre-requisite course for the Div 2 course called - Preparation for Nursing, which goes for one night per week for 7 weeks is going to cost $484.

That seems like a lot of money for something that is government funded! Did you have to do that pre-requisite course also or is it optional?

I am having second thoughts applying with them now due to the cost and thinking i should wait until Feb and apply at Chisholm.

Would be interested to hear what you had to pay and what for to study with Health Train?

Hi, yeah i know it seems like alot... but honestly all other tafes charge the same rate. Basically instead of you having to pay 15000 like at the private training organisations.. u pay a small portion and the govt make up the rest.
OR if u are like me.. and have a health care card, your fees will be even less. About half.. compared to the normal fees. (i think i paid 300 n something) And as for the books i think i paid between 6 and 700 dollars but thats my books for the whole 2 years.
And as far as the preparation for nursing thing goes... i ... a bit like you.. didnt wanna fork out money on a course which i wasnt even sure if i would be accepted into. So i didnt do the preparation for nursing. What happened i ended up having to purchase a medical terminology book and sit a medical terminology exam in the first semester)
The only other thing i've paid for is first aid... but.. if your already working as a pca, your work probably pay for you to do that anyway and in that case you dont have to do first aid through the school if you have a current first aid certificate.
At the end of the day though, whether u go to health train, chisholm, holmesglen, they all charge the same yearly tuition fee. If you would like to email me or talk to me about anything else u can add me on msn alliburrell@gmail.com

Hi Katie80,

I just wanted to let you know i am a current student at Healthtrain, I started in July so am only 7 weeks into the course. I really love it at Healthtrain, everyone is so helpful and lovely, my class has a great bunch of women in it and the hours are great! I would recommend it to anyone! The cost is pretty reasonable about $3000 for the two years but you do need to pay for the nursing prep course and books. i actually did the medical terminology at Holmesglen Tafe last year so I wasn't required to do the prep course. i will say the medical terminology is really beneficial as it will give you a leg up before you start the course.Anyway good luck with your applications and let me know if i can help with anything else.

Hey girls.

I am going to the health train info night on Tuesday the 6th October. Any advice for the test?? I wondered too how much time you have to do their test and how many questions there are specifically in the maths section. I am studying using the Charles Stuart Uni stuff, would that be enough to get me through?

Wish me luck?

Hi Katie80,

I am also studying Div 2 @ Healthtrain (with megan08). I found their entrance exam less intensive than the vet assess one. As far as the maths is concerned my best advice to you is study your fractions (improper fractions) there were a lot of these, the rest was basic math. I consider myself mathematically challenged LOL! and i did really well, the english and comprehension was very basic in my opinion, however those that english is a second language 'may' have some difficulty. If you are successful and are offered a place (fingers crossed for you ;-) you will not regret it. The staff at Healthtrain are lovely, lovely people. They concider you a person, not a number and aim to really get to know you. What i love the most is that although they teach you within the required scope, they teach you so much more about yourself..... I am blown away with particuarily one teacher whos personal experiences and life experiences brings so much more than 'just teaching'.... You will love it. Good luck!!!!! x

Hi all.

I went for the info/test at HealthTrain on Tuesday and i wasn't as bad as i thought. Thanks for the help on what to study it really helped me out and i hope i didn't do too bad?

One thing i noticed was the woman who gave the info session (sorry i forgot her name starts with "M" i think?) came across very strong. Is she like that all the time lol? I know she has to drum it into you that it's no easy ride but my gosh! Lol.

I have to wait 3 weeks for my results because she is going way for 2 and won't do anything till she comes back fingers crossed hey?

How do you all find the study aspect of it all? Are you able to cope with the study as well as working?

I had a thought on something the woman said to us last night and i asked my Boss' opinion on it today but i would love to hear your thoughts on it and i will post that question in a new thread.

Thanks for all your help and i will let you know as soon as do if i got in.

Katie.

LOL!!!! I'm glad that all went well..... That lady starting with 'M' is Maureen..... I laugh cause she's the one that i said that brings her personal experiences when she teaches.... but i have to admit when i went to the info night she scared me... LOL!... Did she say that you are expected to take 2 years out of your life.... Kiss your family and social life goodbye?... he, he.... Her knowledge and method when she teaches is fantastic in my opinion.... She is teaching Anatomy and Physiology at the moment and I love it which is scary to admit for me.... She does it in a way that doesn't leave anyone behind... Her and the other teachers are just wonderful... Penny (the director) is great as well.... She means business but is so nice... Dependant on if you pass which im sure you will.... You will get an interview time... She and Maureen do the interviews.... Don't be intimidated by them.... they are very approachable down to earth honest people. Goodluck, and let us know how you go..... (fingers crossed)

Oh, and to add further to your question.... The Study load is ok at the moment. I am a mum of 4 and finding it pretty good so far to manage... I'm sure it will get alot harder but the teachers at Healthtrain are very supportive and WANT you to discuss any problems you may be having.... they don't want you to leave the course or fail an exam and will do anything to help you.

At the time i started i was only working 2 days per week and i decided to resign and commit myself to family and study. I understand not everyone can do this, but they do advise that you look at your roster and make sure that you have plenty of time to dedicate to study and designate a 'mental health day' where you do no study, no work and let it be about you.

I think as the course progresses working almost full time and study would become difficult as there is so much commitment needed for both, but i suppose those who don't have children and the commitments that come with raising a family will find it easier. For me i don't think i could do it and thankfully i can afford not too... Also i find having a great support network of family and friends helps a lot to.....

Hope this had helped...

All the best... x x

Hi essjay.

Yes Maureen that's her name and she did say she was gonna take 2 years of our lives away and yes she scared me too lol.

She said anyone who is unsure please leave now and no-one did and she laughed lol. I have support from friends, family, work (as i am working under boss' that are nurses) one of which finished her Div2 last year and kept everything so she said if i needed help, she can help me out with notes and stuff also, the boyfriend hopes i will do it too he even bought me a Littmann stethescope with my name engraved on it (bit premature i think but nice none the less) so that's good, lots of support so they know i will be working hard and will help me out if needed.

My job is casual so i can take as much time as i need to and they don't mind.

I wonder if you could help me out on this one though? I asked my Div2 boss and she said Maureen was incorrect. I have posted in another thread (in student nursing i think) but i might ask here too.

Maureen said if you fail the meds test at the end you fail the course. However my boss said to me that if you pass everything but fail the meds only, you can still be registred as a Div2 just without the meds and do it later if you wanted to? Is that right or have things changed since last year?

Have you heard anymore about it? It seems unfair that if you do really well on every other subject and fail meds, you fail everything and can't be registered at all!

I know i will have to study alot with meds calculations as it's not my strongest point (i always forget the formula) but they will show you throughout the course how to do it but i just thought i would ask incase.

What do you think?

BTW my msn is katiegrl80@hotmail.com if you wanted to add me feel free.

Thanks so much for all the info and advice essjay it's very helpful. All i gotta do now is pray i get a look in.

Katie XOXO.

Hey Katie80,

Goodluck with Healthtrain, if you get in you will love it!

Everyone is really lovely and supportive. essjay is right the teachers are really cool and approachable. Maureen isn't as scary as she comes across and has a wicked sense of humour but she can be tough and that's because she wants every single student to do well! I personally really, really like her!

The work load is getting more and more full on but i think the key is to pace yourself and take it just one day at a time. I don't work so that definitely helps but I have 2 kids and a house etc and i still struggle keeping up with everything!

As far as the meds go, as far as I know at healthtrain if you fail your med exam you fail the course but it might be worthwhile double checking. Good luck

Megan

Ps essjay is that you Sam?

My understanding is... There is ALOT of changes going on as far as division 2 nursing at the moment. I'm studying the cert IV in nursing.. which includes medication. In the past medication was an option in the Cert IV course.. so you could register without it.. and do the meds later if you chose to. Whereas my understanding is the meds is a compulsory course component now. So in other words yeah if u fail it.. u fail the course. I think u have a chance to resit though.
Hope i've got this right.. but yeah thats my understanding.
And Maureen may seem a bit scary at first, but she is a great teacher and very approachable. I think she just likes to weed out those who aren't gonna take the course seriously. Because it does take alot of dedication and study to get through the course.
