Hi guys, I am new to the forum and first time posting. I have been working in IT for quite some time now, still 20 though have no HSC. Always wanted to to become a Registered Nurse, I like the hospitals environment for some reason. I am enrolling into the cert in AIN for this July intake which will go for 6 months and then planning to do the Diploma in Nursing afterwards and try and get into uni from there. I was told that Meadowbank and Ultimo Tafe offers the Diploma in Nursing, so I rang both Tafes and was told they no longer offer the course, is this right? On the Meadowbank website it says that they offer the Advance Diploma only. Anyone in the area or have studied the Diploma at either Tafes? Any help/info will be more than useful. Thanks

EN11, I encourage you to look at doing your EEN (diploma in nursing) straight up. There might be some test that you may have to sit in your state to determine if you can pursue this line. The AIN cert is more for those wanting to pursue work in an age care facility or in a hospital doing basic hygiene cares plus some. The reason why I suggest so is that going about it as you have suggested would be pretty arduous. If you go TAFE for your diploma, it would take you around 18 months. From there you can go on to Uni and it would be another 2 years. In total it would be 3.5 years to get to an RN position, unless you have sufficient funds to tie you through extended periods of study time, it can be pretty taxing on your pockets.

I agree with Skitzo, I think doing an AIN course would be a waste of time and money if you're 100% sure you want to be a nurse. Then start off with your diploma and you can always convert to RN even whilst working as an EEN part time ( Diploma take approx 1 year off Bachelor of nursing ) This is what I plan to do and i start my EEN course next month ! Goodluck with everything im giving you this advice because i was in the simular situation I am the same age, a school leaver with no HSC ( or VCE here in Victoria ) and working in Telecom industry for 4 years but have always wanted to be a nurse and been absolutely facinated by hospitals and the human body. You just have to get your foot in the door like starting an EEN course and its upward from there !

Goodluck with everything!
