Hi All I'm thinking about applying for the next intake - but do not have a lot of confidence in myself - especially passing the exams and I hear the anatomy exam is a killer - a no. of nurses I know had to take the exam twice. I think I'd be ok on the assignments. The fact I haven't really studied since Year 11 doesn't help! (I won't tell you my age but I do have 4 teenage children!) I did complete my Cert 111 in Aged Care a few years ago and also have a dual certificate in Business/Business Administration. But these are things I knew about! Could anyone who has started the course - please help me out and let me know how difficult it is. A) I'd hate to start and fail if it's out of my league and B) I'd also hate to waste money if I don't feel I can do it. Thanks for your assistance Signed Nervous Nellie! :)

Hi I have just completed the course, did it online and have 5 kids at home ranging from 2 up to 15. It was hard, and stressful because I have no family here but it is not as bad as you think it might be. The anatomy exam is fine, there is often a lot of stress lead up, but then it turns out to be not as bad. As long as you stay focused, keep on top of everything and follow the study guides, you will get through it fine ;) I haven't studied in over 20 years and I managed fine :)

Hi Yolanda Thanks for your advice. Wow 5 kids and on your own - you're a SuperWoman!! Sorry just a couple of other questions. a) Is the A&P exam multiple choice? Did you complete the exam at home - on line - or did you need to attend the TAFE to do the exam? b) Did you feel you were getting enough help and understood the course on line (I'm querying whether it's better with face to face learning rather than on line) c) Could you tell me which textbook you used for A&P (My step daughter is doing her RN's though Uni and I'm just wondering if I can borrow her textbook rather than buy my own. d) What did you do at Residential School and I assume you are graded on the practical component. Thanks again - I really appreciate you time and thoughts. Kind Regards - Darls :-)

Hi Darls Thought I'd put in my 2c worth too. I'm 5wks into the course and can tell you that yes, the A & P exam is multiple choice plus labelling diagrams. It is completed at home online. I agree with Yolanda - there is alot of stress beforehand, but having just completed the first exam I can say it was nowhere near as bad as I thought! I can tell you with the A & P component we are getting lots of support. You do get to re-sit the exam if you fail. There is a group forum as well as chat room. We also have weekly online tutorials. The teacher is also available via email etc. The textbook we are using is "Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology" 10th Edition. Haven't been to Residential yet, but I do know at our first one we have to give a 10minute oral presentation on a chronic disease. We also get shown and assessed on the practical component ie. taking temps, blood pressure, making beds etc etc Hope this helps. I am 45 and have 3 teenage children and haven't studied for a number of years also. It's all about being organised and making sure you have a set routine (I find this helps) Elaine

Lainey You are brilliant! I have noted how many chats/forums you have answered for other people. I think you would be briliant as a Nurse Educator at a later point in your career! You obviously care about your career/other people and what you are doing. Best of luck. Thank you so much for your advice. Until tonight I was wavering between Vet Nursing or Nursing, but I think you've changed my mind again!! :-)

Hi Ladies, It is so nice to get a small insight into your life as I am 43, married and have one 10 year old child. I will be starting my GCIT online course in November. I have been feeling somewhat anxious over making the decision to pursue a very long held dream to become a nurse and undertake massive career change. I have been working in the banking industry for 21 years and this has been my fall back position as it is all that I know. Sometimes I feel that I am getting to old to start another career however I have been wanting this for so long and the time has never been right. Thank you for putting me at ease with your thoughts as it does make me feel more reassured that I will be able to cope with the study etc! Annemarie

Hi All, thought I would put my 2 cents worth in as well. Like Elaine, I am 7 weeks into the GCIT online Enrolled nursing course. I too have kids at home and work part time, but decided to take the plunge as I have always wanted to be a nurse. Although it is very daunting at the thought of study, as like most of you haven't looked at textbooks for many years, they support with the tutors and other students is great. Yes, you do have to be focused and organised, and at times you may struggle, but just keep plugging on and you will get there...I am off to residential in January, and looking forward to meeting all the other students then...good luck, it will be worth it!!

update #1
Hi everyone, Thought I would add my bit also. I am just in the last week of first semester at GCIT. The formats of assessments change all the time. Our A&P exam consisted of 3 exams, which entailed short answered questions approx 100-150 words) multiple choice and diagrams. Whilst at Resi school the intake before us was also there and where really unfriendly towards us, apparently because we did not sit a 3 hour A&P exam like they did so we were bluggers? On placement a couple of weeks ago, I talked with an EEN who studied at GCIT 2 yrs ago, & theirs was exams for every body system. So what I am getting at is , I think they change it all the time. I am in my 40's with 3 kids, work P/T and study P/T. As you get further into the semester it gets harder! We have been studying 5 subjects at once fot the majority of the semester. By the time we got to Resi, half had dropped back or out! It is hard, and time consuming, and stressful, and demanding. BUT if you want it , it IS achievable. I am not trying to be a party pooper, I am just trying to be honest. If your not going to give it your all, don't bother, it is an expensive course to give up on!!! If you want it, it is very rewarding. I love it, but it has been HARD!!!

Hi all, I start the Enrolled Nursing course online - part time next Monday with GCIT. Would love to hear if anyone else out there is also participating in the same course. I'm a stay at home mum, haven't studied for 20 years so big challenges ahead. Rach

Kysanne, You sound similar to me - I am also in my 40's, have 3 kids, work part time and studying part time!! We have just started with the 5 subjects at the one time and yeah, it's stressful. Wouldn't change it for anything though:-)
