I have just been accepted into doing my EEN course, am very excited. I am 51 and was wondering if anyone else has attempted doing this at my age? Have been working in the medical environment for many many years so have a bit of experience. Am I taking on too much??

Hi Phoebe, Congrats on being accepted for your course it is exciting. I am in my mid forties and finished my dip last year and had the same thoughts as you there were many people my age and older in the course so dont worry my background is not nursing so you will be fine good luck

Thanks Pinky I have been told that there is a lot of mature age students out there. I am a very young feeling 51, so never feel my age. It is something I have longed to do and now I have the chance. I am not worried about passing the course it is more of a worry about finding work after I finish. But I have an interview tomorrow for some casual work as a AIN. Fingers crossed.

Hi Phoebe, I'm looking at doing either the EEN or EN next year but am having trouble finding the course. TAFE advised that EN enrolments for next year will be available in August. I'm wondering where you are doing your EEN course? Thanks Pen. PS I'm 42.

Hi Penelope I was lucky enough to get a placement for this month because I had enquired at Bremmer Tafe and asked to be notified when they were taking enrolments for 2012 as I had missed the July 2011 intake. Because they had some vacancies become available I was asked to take the test. I start on the 25th July. I am not sure where you live but I also got a placement at Alex Hills but it was too far for me to travel everyday. Try the Alex Hills, Logan and Bremmer Tafe. Southbank tafe also have it but it seems to be a lot more expensive for some reason. Good luck. I am excited to start.

Penelope I just read your posting and see you are in Sydney so those Tafe's are no use to you. Try ringing a few down in Sydney and see if they have any vacancies. Some don't turn up and some just drop out, you may be lucky enough.

Good on you Phoebe - never too late I think! I am starting my Dip EN in less than 2 weeks now - very excited. I am nearly 37 - so am too a mature student. I was told the other day that over 50% of EN students are mature - so we should fit right in! A lady graduated from our TAFE in May this year - she was 61 years old. She not only passed with flying colours - she also got Student of the Year AND got her first preference for her grad year! Don't under estimate the value of maturity when it comes to nursing. Well done, relax and enjoy the ride I say!
Cheers Rebecca

Thanks Bec It is always good to have feed back on here. I am feeling better about age now as I went for job yesterday in Aged care and they were great said a lot older than I are going back and doing their RN. Everything seems to be coming to gether for me, I made the right decision to go and do nursing. Thanks guys for all the comments

Older than you (slightly) & so far managing O.K. I was by far the oldest in my class though they were a lovely bunch & it was not an issue. Use your life experience, maturity, ability to think on your fee etc etc. You will glad you gave it a go. Kaz
