I believe the vast majority of EEN jobs are available within private residential aged care facilities (Aged Care)
However in saying that there are many positions available within a Public sub-acute environment such as Rehab, Gem, mental health and general wards.
Some emergency departments (that have SOU units employ EEN's)
Positions do exist within acute environments at majour public hospitals but i would say the ratio is 90% Div-1...

Depending on which state you work in and the hospital, EENs can work in a lot of places including the operative theatre, recovery room, and even paediatrics/maternity in some places as well as the ones Leroy mentioned. EENs can also work in the community helping patients in their homes and at medical centres.
Private hospitals seem to tend to let EENs do more/work in more places than public.

Hey Sarbear,

I finished my Cert IV in Nursing on the 22nd June '11, interviewed for a EN Graduate Program at a well known private hospital in outer Melbourne the very next day and just 4 days later was offered a position in Paediatrics! I have now been working for 6 weeks and love it! En's can work pretty much in any area they are not just confined to aged care. I will admit though after looking at Seek for weeks before I finished my course it is hard to find work without at least a year of acute experience, I have also heard it is pretty much impossible to get into the acute system without first doing a grad program. Would this be an option for you?

these days an EEN can really work anywhere- it all depends on the person and the hospital at the end of the day.

i finished my course in november last year, applied for a grad program and was offered one where i was going to rotate from surgical, into cardiac, then theatre and lastly cath lab. in the end i didnt take the job because i was going on a overseas holiday, but within a week of returning from holiday i had an interview at another hospital and was offered another grad position. this time the rotations im doing are mental health then mother/baby unit and lastly surgical/day procedure unit. the first hospital had advertised their grad program, the second hospital didnt. i just sent an email asking if they employed brand new EENs- and the overwhelming response was YES! definitely!. and thats where i am now and totally loving it.

id suggest you just start contacting hospitals regardless of whether they are actually advertising- the reality in any industry (including health and nursing) is that most jobs are NEVER advertised- so if you wait for things to be advertised you might not get far. the majority of jobs ive had in my life so far werent advertised- i just contacted places and asked if they were looking for staff- and its always worked out well for me.

lots of facilities now are fully utilizing the advantages of EENs, i have a friend who is working in a fabulous dermatology clinic, and another who is working in paeds. so dont feel like the only options are aged care.....definitely not the case : ).

Hey Jules!

I have just finished my course and waiting for rego as an EEN! I'm so excited. I have been looking at grad programs. I know epworth have a div 2 grad program. If you don't mind me asking where did you do your grad program? Iv looked on alot of hospital websites and seek just have positions for agency nurses atm.
Cheers

hi Sarah, congrats on finishing ur course!
im guessing your in Melbourne if your talking about Epworth? Ramsay also has a grad program, they advertise it well, so if i were you id get on the Ramsay website and call the Grad co-ordinator and ask if you can still apply- they may already have closed the application dates. but they also do a mid year program. some of the healthscope hospitals will also have grad programs available but they dont seem to advertise, not for EN's anyway. so depending on where you live id just contact a few of the hospitals directly, ask to speak with the DON or whoever is responsible for employment- thats what i did. Also St vincents and mercy private do a grad year but as far as i know its run mid year, you could call and check (or look at their website).

hope that helps a little?

Hi Jules

I have applied for grad programs at Ramsey health and Epworth:) FIngers crossed i hear back from them. I will apply for st vincents and mercy! You think it would be so easy to get a job as a nurse. However, its coming up to christmas/new years and i dont think ppl are really hiring! I'm not keen on agency work as a new nurse.
THanks for your advice Jules, i will take it on board

I would say that EEN's can work in a number of different environments. Aged care, acute care, rehab, mental health, theatre, day surgery or even GP clinics. The more experience you can get the better.

Jules74: will you stay on as a permanent member of staff when your grad program is finished or do you have to look for work somewhere else? And if you get to stay, will you be able to ask to work in a particular area?
