Hi Donna

I've had that itch too, and I scratched it! You should look into courses, many of the FT have very doable contact hours on campus. At age 36 I'm about to resign and take a uni offer to do nursing next year.

Go for it! I'm 31 and I'm leaving a 10 year corporate career to embark into Nursing. There ain't such thing as 'being too old'. Knowledge knows no age limit :)

I am 38, 3 kids, and this year I have gone back to Uni to do my Div 1. I am now into semester 2. alot of work, especially juggling working p/t, looking after the kids, and the house. I am at Uni full time. I pretty much dont have time to do anything else.. but its only for 3 years, and it will all be worth it in the end.

Fantastic to read about other 'mature age' students starting nursing. You've all just made me much braver :-)

I agree Ros - next question is how hard is it to get into nursing courses? I assume you do an exam and interview?

Hi Donna,

I am 37 and hoping to start full time next Feb after 400 years in I.T., so there are a few of us oldies about!

If you want to do a degree then you will most likely have to sit a STAT test as part of the application process. VTAC also allows you to apply with special entry consideration as a mature student, presumably the other states do the same or similar. If you are planning on starting in semester 1 2010 then you need to get applying now :o)
Or if you decide on Diploma or Cert IV for Enrolled/Dev2 Nursing then you will probably have to sit a VETASSESS test. Not sure where you are but my local Div2 courses are massively over subscribed.

Some courses will ask you in for an interview, so prepare yourself for that. I have an interview with Melbourne Uni on Monday, it's gonna take some explaining when I turn to work wearing a suit for the first time in months and then take a 2 hour lunch break!!

If you don't give it a go then you will never know what might have been, so I say jump feet first and see what happens!

Cheers,
Ian.

Of the class I am presently in, 90% of them are over 30.
The oldest is 57.

Age doesn't matter. Your passion does :)

Hi all

I have just turned 49 and after working in full time employment for 27 years (22 of those in the public service), am about to commence Uni to do the Gateway to Nursing course. After that, I will look at enrolling to study Div 1 nursing. It has always been my passion ever since I was 16. Due to life committments - marriage, kids, mortgage etc etc - I could of never considered studing nursing. But now that the kids are adults and things a a bit easier (financially) - I can finally persue my lifelong ambition.

Thank you for your posts, they have been very inspirational and I am so excited about entering the nursing field.
