Hello Nurses,

I'm Sarah. I have been offered a place at ACU doing Bachelor of Nursing (Mental Health). Mental health does interest me but I am not 100% sure it's the area I want to work in when I complete my degree. I am interested in wound care as well.

My question is: If I do the Bachelor of Nursing (Mental Health) course rather than the straight nursing bachelor will I be prepared enough to do 'normal' nursing when I graduate, or is the mental health nursing really geared toward only mental health?

Please help me, I would really appreciate ANY feedback at all as I have to make a decision whether to accept my offer.

Thank you,

Sarah

Hello Oliver,

I ended up choosing the Mental Health bachelor. First year is just the normal core nursing subjects then in second year we start doing mental health based units so I'm not too sure how it's going to be actually!

Are you thinking about doing this course?

Hi Sarah.  i always wanted to do ER, but MH is interesting to me as well.  BTW, how many hours/days are you on campus usually.

No there's not much difference at all and that's why I decided to go for it. I figured even if I don't end up liking it, at worst I'll end up qualified to work in Mental Health which isn't even a bad thing. Also I figured having some experience dealing with mentally ill patients would come in handy working in other departments too (lots of MH patients are admitted via Emergency)

I attend full time. Last semester I had four units: Bio (6 hours), Inquiry into Health care (3 hours), Beginning Professional Practice (5 hours) and then The Person, Health and Wellbeing (3 hours) so all up I was on campus for 17 hours, but then extra for homework and getting your required reading done.

This semester I have four units again but I do one whole day at the hospital in a clinical school there. ACU has an agreement with Werribee Mercy Hospital so any students of ACU who live near Werribee complete two of their units at the hospital in a classroom area and also go onto the wards to practice their skills. Because of that I only have one day at uni for Biology and UNCC100, which is a core subject unrelated to nursing and that one only goes for an hour.

All of the lectures are recorded and available online so I don't bother going in for them. So I guess technically I have 1.5 days of uni (and only 4 hours of that is spent at the ACU campus).

100% go for it, I am loving it so much! If you have any other questions let me know, happy to answer them for you.
