Hi I want to know does anyone suffer chronic back issues? How do you deal with this with nursing? I have been studying something different for the past 3 years and really miss nursing, and decided to enrol this year, which I have been accepted however I do have back issues (which im hoping to start my injection treatment in Feb). I dont want this to hamper my career of nursing and I love it and have a passion for it (started my bachelor of nursing 10 years ago). Just wanted other peoples thoughts and opinions or their experiences

Hi Dani, I have had a sore lower back on and off for years, so understand where you're coming from.

The best advice I can give is to not take shortcuts with patients/residents/clients, always use a slide sheet, manual handling equipment, raise the bed to hip height and bend at the knees.

So many times nurses and carers do the wrong things because they are in a hurry. I agree that there is often time constraints, and a lot to get done, but nothing is more important than protecting your back. Also, something I don't do, but recommend, is to strengthen your core muscles with exercise.

All facilities, and I would imagine hospitals too (I have only worked in Aged Care), have physios on-hand to give advice re back care.

Good luck with the injections.

Thanks Debb, I feel this is the only thing im worried about, I mean when I try to think back 10-9 years ago when I did my placements with nursing, I know they really pushed the issue to use "tools" to help with lifting etc, and im sure they still do I guess I will just have to make sure I do them and not take the short cuts, my specialist tends to think with the injections fortnightly I will be able to live 'normally', i know nurses are prone to 'back issues' obviously from hurrying with lifting etc. Thanks for your comment much appreciated find it hard to think back, but back then I didnt have back issues, so it didnt occur to me
