Howdy,

I too am a mature male of 37 working in IT and will be making the move into nursing next Feb, doing a Masters or Bachelor of Nursing. Can't answer your career question (tho I am sure there will be people on here who can and will) but did want to say hi & wish you the best of luck with your career move, I am sure it will be worth it.

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Jilamint,

Congrats on believing in yourself, I have left a 12 year career in accounting to become a nurse, and have just completed semester one last year in my div 2 Diploma of nursing. Unsure of where in Oz you are located by try Griffith University in Qld, campuses at Logan, Brisbane, Nathan etc, they cover alot of specialised nursing courses other than Reg Nurse/and of Midwifery. They have alot of the community services course which could pick up on the sexual health side of things that you have an interest in.

Best of Luck, PS, Guys still need male nurses to talk out that kind of stuff. Well done. Follow your heart.

jilamint, May I suggest trying a bit of work as a nurse...say a casual job as an AIN in a nursing home. If you are willing to learn, generally most nursing homes will take on an AIN (Assistant in Nursing) without qualifications and train you for a cert III. Its a good way to start and to see if this is for you or not, I am only suggesting this as you mentioned that you were bored with IT and rather than jumping into something you're not familar with, give it a try first. If you do, then you the skies' the limit.

The differences betwen ENs and RNs are not much...RNs generally can administer oral medications, IVs, injections and is basically a step up from ENs (Ens who are medication endorsed can also dispense medications according to prescription). However the door opener for specialisation is to be an RN. All the best dude
