I am an RN and am currently studying Midwifery and Pediatrics at Deakin University as a distance education student. I need to do a 40 hour clinical for each of these subjects and have to arrange it myself. Has anyone else done this? and if so can you give me advice, eg about hospitals that might take me? I live in Sydney but if necessary would go interstate for the 2 weeks. Any help/advice will be very much appreciated.

So... most public hospitals have some kind of nursing education or grad/student support person who specifically deals with nursing students and new nursing grads. It would be worth asking Deakin if they have any contacts as well, as they may at least have a name or email address. If not approach the hospitals directly and ask who looks after nursing education in the area you are interested in. Don't forget private hospitals especially for midwifery, in privates and smaller hospitals try asking for the NUM (nurse unit manager) of the relevant ward. Don't give up either, these people can be bad at returning messages etc so just keep calling or emailing until they give you a yes or no.

If you can't find somewhere in Sydney itself try some regional places that may get fewer students. I can't name any really as I'm not from Sydney but larger base hospitals should have paeds and obstetrics.Just start google searching hospitals and check what services they offer to see if they have the relevant areas then ring them - for privates the main operators are Healthscope, Healthe, Ramsay and then there's lots of other smaller ones.

Hope that helps

Hi....I hope you don't mind me asking, but I didn't realise that it was possible to do Midwifery at Deakin as a distance student. Could you tell me: Which Campus is that from? Are you only eligible for distance ed because you are interstate? Could you also tell me who I could contact in relation to this course? Any other info would be most appreciated.
I'm sorry that I can't be of help to you, good luck in finding your placement.
