Hey guys,
I'm new to this website so i am giving this a go. I'm graduating (if i pass all my subjects this year at uni from UTS). I'm applying for the new grad program for 2009 but i am very scared because i heard it is VERY difficult to get into. My first pref is RPA (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital). Does anyone have any information or tips (anything) for the new grad program. Including interview, hospital and area services. Also we only get the one interview right? What's the point of placing so many hospital pref is only ONE hospital will be inteerviewing me?
Thanks alot in advanced.. i am very terrified about all this.

Not sure how it is in NSW but for Qld health jobs, you just apply to one central location and select what hospitals you want and if they want grads, then they will interview you. Of course if the place where you last did prac is very happy with you, they may straight out offer an informal interview and job by the end of the year.

Private hospitals you apply to directly.

In my experience of my first 7 months out, DONT go private unless you are very very confident with your nursing skills and knowledge and time mangement. Public is better coz you have more staff on compared to private, and most are teaching hospitals so they are there to teach you to be a nurse and become a competent novice. Plus most public ones will offer you a chance to do modules which lead to a grad certificate....eg my housemate works at Royal Brisbane and is working towards a grad cert in neurology.

I just signed in to this forum. Hi utssydnurse, I think most of the student nurses who are applying for the new grad prog do not have much information. I always get the 'not sure' response when i ask something about the new grad prog. I suppose the hospitals you applied for will give chances for interviews and who knows...one them may be for you.

In Perth it is quite easy to get into a graduate program. I got into one last year, at a big teaching hospital, but then had to repeat one of my units, so now I have to reapply. I've decided to apply to Sydney and Melbourne for a change. I have already got 4 interviews in Melbourne to attend (by phone). In Victoria you can be interviewed by all your preferences, unlike Perth where you are interviewed by your first preference and if you are not accepted, you are then interviewed by your next preference and so on. I think Sydney is like this.

Hi all, I am new to Nurse Central, what a great forum to talk to fellow nurses... I have just finished my degree at University of Western Sydney (Campbelltown Sydney). I had my interview last year (September, 2007) for a new graduate position. Don't know what happened in interview, but I didnt get a first round offer at any of my choices of hospitals. I was devastated, I did well at University, I am a mature age student, what did I do wrong??? I found out later that there were more graduates than positions available, even though I was finishing mid year I was panicking, thinking I havent got a job after 3 years hard work. Anyway, It all ended happily ever after... so dont despair or panic, you will get a job. I think NSW Health really endeavoured to find all new graduates a position. I was offered a position at Liverpool Hospital and in Mental Health. I have chosen Mental Health, and I am so happy there. What a great job, staff are wonderful, and it is an interesting and fulfilling job. I am doing a a Transition in Nursing New Graduate Year which includes study blocks and alot of incentives to progress in a career in Mental Health Nursing.... all the best everyone...Kas

Hi everyone, I am also new to nurse central. I am in the final stages of a nursing program with Syd Uni. and am waiting to here about the new grad. program. We got very little information from the uni on the application program or what to expect in interviews. Being interviewed at one facility and then having your score passed on to other hospitals in the event that your first preference doesn't want you is rather frustrating. The questions were fairly non-specific although the panel that interviewed me were really nice. I have also applied for student midwife positions... I know that last year there were lots of new grads that missed out on places...so we are all feeling very nervous as there are many more new grads than there are positions for them. We should be notified within the next 2 weeks...good luck to everyone else who is also waiting to here whether they have a place. Don't know what to do if not successful...what have others done??
