I am a mature aged student whoi is completing my bachelor of nursing this year. Like many ohters on this forum I do not have a graduate year program. I want to do a postgraduate but all VIC schools require that I have 1 year medical/surgical experience before beginning a postgrad. I might have a prospect for aged care, in a very rural area, but this will not satisfy my requirments to do a postgrad. Plus I would have to relocate my so who is in the middle of his VCE, and then move back to go to university.
If I do agency work for a year will this be enough to get into a postgrad?
Why do the media say we have a shortage of nurses if there is not enough jobs to go around?

SSGrasso, try applying for regional hospitals for Graduate Nurse Programs. Its very difficult to gain a position within metropolitan hospitals. Keep calling regional hospitals and see who the person to direct your resume to. Nothing wrong with gaining work experience i age care but I think most states have a restriction in that once you have been gainfully employed as a nurse, you CANNOT apply to join a GNP. So please check with your Uni, for directions on this. Good luck mate, hope you'll find a placement soon

Hi

I agree with Schizo. If you are getting it difficult to get a job in metropolitan hospitals then you should get experience in some regional hospital and try for the metropolitan hospitals.
