Hi,
I am currently 1st year UNISA external student, so far my experience has been pretty lonely, not much support given.... I too am concerned about placements, more so for 3rd year. A girlfriend of mine was to complete her 3rd year this year but had to drop out along with about 20ish other Vic students as placements could not be found in metro melb. She could have got Benalla (a struggle as she is a single mother of 4 under 10, living on Morn Penisula), but the uni stuffed up her first aid papers, so she missed out. Therefore she was required to go to SA for 8 weeks X2, but couldn't do it and had to drop out. After all this she tried to be registered as an RN2 but apparently the Vic and SA boards see things differently and she was not able to do this.....she is therefore having a 'gap' year and applying for Monash next year.
Another person I know has just moved to Townsville and applied for placement up there and was successful and is enjoying it (no kids or mortgage). So as far as I can figure it out, perhaps a 3rd year placement would be successful if the hospital was considered RURAL?????
Apparently 2nd year isn't too hard to get as it is majority aged care, but as 3rd year involves acute care it is more difficult to get ????? (correct me if I am wrong). My girlfriend was told that for example Peninsula Health and Ramsay Health in South Vic are affiliated mostly with Monash and Deakin, something to do with insurances for other unis?
Most of the above info I have received from my girlfriend. I myself will be applying to Monash and hoping for a 6 month credit at least for the 12 months I would have done!!!!!!!! I also have 4 kids and a hubby with a demanding job so 8 weeks in SA or the country just is not logistical.
Apparently the uni has had no problems prior to this year......Let me know how you all go, will be interesting....
Thanks
Amy
