Hi-

Just wandering if their are any othe UNI SA external students here?

Am currently doing my second year and want some info from students who have already completed placements as i'm doing my first placement this year.

Not sure if i'm getting placement in VICTORIA and as a result and tossing around the idea of transferring to another uni next year

Thanks in advance!- Jess

Hi Jess,

I too am a student of UNISA doing second year and ELA1 this year... i am worried about not getting a melb placement... there is another student who I have just been in contact with and she was able to do ELA1 in melb, but had to do ELA2 in SA... bit worried about this as I have a family and can't leave them for 8 weeks....

Hi-

The clinical co-ordinator told my partner who called up becasue i had spoken to her and she had left me in such a state with her rudness, told my partner that i would almost definantly get ELA-1 in Melbourne because even if you dont get any of your preferances they cross match you with other students places that did agree to take students. However she said ELA-2 and 3 will also be more than likely in Adelaide becasue they prefer to have you in Adelaide for placement as its easier to grade.

Im applying for Melbourne unis at the end of the year as i would rather be on campus and definantly be in Melbourne for placement thyen risk going to Adelaide- i without a doubt can't go to Adelaide for 4 months.

Having said that the placememt issues aren't the only reasons for me wanting to transfer- ELA 3 is scheduled for the same time that the grad programs are all doing their interviews so i can't be flying to and from Melbourne for interviews all the time and the other reason had been when i went for HOA workshop in April although we should of been doing all the labs and learning all the technical things that corresponded from our topics i learnt nothing i think i learn how to do IV, Injections and that was all and quite frankly im going to look pretty stupid not knowing how to do a lot of things when graduating. And i hear not a high number of students get grad programs due to the clinical experience.

All in all my experience with uni sa has been nothing short of dissapointing.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am a current 2nd year student from unisa aswell and I applied and was excepted into vic uni this year. but when I applied for credit they only granted me one subject so afterwards i contacted the other vic unis and they said they prob wouldnt grant full credits either.
Just thought I would share as you may not find it worthwhile applying if you have to start all over again.

Thanks Mel for your post... I found the same thing with Monash Uni... would be a waste of time if we had to do it all over again.

In search of placements for ELA2 & ELA3 I have been contacting various hospitals if they accept UNISA students; so far Peninsula Health & Southern Health have both responded saying that they do.... but i don't know what the result will be when UNISA make contaact with them.... need to keep my fingers crossed and hope it goes to plan.... cause I don't have a plan b as yet if i don't get accepted anywhere in Melb...

Hi,

I am currently 1st year UNISA external student, so far my experience has been pretty lonely, not much support given.... I too am concerned about placements, more so for 3rd year. A girlfriend of mine was to complete her 3rd year this year but had to drop out along with about 20ish other Vic students as placements could not be found in metro melb. She could have got Benalla (a struggle as she is a single mother of 4 under 10, living on Morn Penisula), but the uni stuffed up her first aid papers, so she missed out. Therefore she was required to go to SA for 8 weeks X2, but couldn't do it and had to drop out. After all this she tried to be registered as an RN2 but apparently the Vic and SA boards see things differently and she was not able to do this.....she is therefore having a 'gap' year and applying for Monash next year.

Another person I know has just moved to Townsville and applied for placement up there and was successful and is enjoying it (no kids or mortgage). So as far as I can figure it out, perhaps a 3rd year placement would be successful if the hospital was considered RURAL?????

Apparently 2nd year isn't too hard to get as it is majority aged care, but as 3rd year involves acute care it is more difficult to get ????? (correct me if I am wrong). My girlfriend was told that for example Peninsula Health and Ramsay Health in South Vic are affiliated mostly with Monash and Deakin, something to do with insurances for other unis?

Most of the above info I have received from my girlfriend. I myself will be applying to Monash and hoping for a 6 month credit at least for the 12 months I would have done!!!!!!!! I also have 4 kids and a hubby with a demanding job so 8 weeks in SA or the country just is not logistical.

Apparently the uni has had no problems prior to this year......Let me know how you all go, will be interesting....

Thanks

Amy

A friend of mine was doing nursing at La Trobe and transferred to monash a year ago and had got virtually no credit.

I also spoke to the registration board about registering as a DIV 2 at the end of Second year as a heard from freinds at ACU and Deakin that you were able to and the lady i spoke to said i needed to contact my university as to whether i was able to register as a DIV 2 and when i contacted the university they told me no i wasn't able to register as a DIV 2 because they didn't have an exit point to register like many other universities.

So far my expereince with UNI SA has been beyond dissapointing and i'm also in the same boat that if i have to go to Adelaide i don't really have a plan, going to Adelaide for such long periods of time and having to pay for accomodation, bills ect just isn't really possible for me if i'm also going such a long period of time not working.

Had they told me in the beginning that the likelyhood of me getting palcement in Victoria was slim i wouldn't of applied instead what i got from the university was that their was a small chance i might end up in Adelaide.

If it comes down to me starting again then i guess i need to go to Adelaide

Mel- what unis did you apply for/call up that told you about credit?

Cheers!

Hello to you all,

WOW. I'm just dismayed at how difficult it appears to study nursing as an external student at Uni SA. I am in the process of getting ready to study after being accepted. Our first workshop is on 18, 19/02/2012. The difficulties you have outlined are a real concern to me. If anyone reads this post please reply and let me know how you went and what you are currently undertaking as I know the posts were from mid last year.

Please help. Thanks
