Hello All,

I am interested in starting a Dip in Enrolled Nursing ASAP, having lived overseas for the past few years. I have a tertiary education but have decided to take on EN. I come from a family of nurses and in the past few years have been drawn to it more and more. The opportunity to travel over the world is appealing also.

I attended a information day at Careers Australia in Sydney this week, however I still feel uncertain about it. The course is subject to approval by ANMAC and they are yet to give us a date as to when the course might be approved. Its my understanding that the course has been running in QLD, VIC and SA for sometime now.

Im not sure whether to hold out for this course to be approved or to apply for TAFENSW courses which are further away from home and with only 16 places available in each class Im reluctant to put all my eggs in one basket. TAFENSW have a few locations pending and St George TAFE has an intake in December. Careers Australia have said they could possibly start by May/June. The Careers Aust course is nearly $9000.00 more than TAFE and the only thing they spoke about in the session as to what we would be learning is 'Harvard referencing' I know how to write assignments/essays etc. The session only went for 20 minutes, I would like some feedback on the lecturers? whether hospitals are more likely to take on TAFE students rather then privately educated students? Their reputation?

I am not interested in Aged Care and this course seems to really focus on aged care.

Any feedback would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

Beck

Hey there,

I'm a current student with Careers Australia in Qld and so far I've found them ok. So far when we've been 'out in the field' we've been told that CA Students generally considered have more knowledge, and are classed as better educated than Tafe students, but who know. It really depends on the Student I think. They are considerably more expensive then Tafe and I can't really comment as to whether they are better then tafe but overall so far I have been pleased with the service I've received. My only advice is be prepared. It's an 18 month full time course and it's full on. The work load is intense.... they go through subjects quite quickly but having said that I'm a mum of 4, work part time and seem to manage.... If you want it bad enough, you make it happen!

Best of Luck!!!

Hello Bec

Just be aware of the nursing situation Australia is having at the moment.  You are not always guaranteed to finish in 18months if you study your Enrolled Nursing full-time.  Shortages and closures have extended my 18 month course full-time to now 2 years.

On a high note..  I highly recommend this course and you will LOVE it !!!

Beck, if you have a prior tertiary qualification, then I recommend you to look into doing a graduate entry degree in nursing that will lead to registration as an RN upon completion. The cost of getting that degree is about the same as going for TAFE to do your EN. Time frame is equally the same but the plus point, is that you will be qualifying as an RN from which you can then pursue specialising if you so wish. No disrespect to ENs, but many have to return to Uni to gain their credentials for registration as RNs as its the next step up to opening doors.

All the best in your decision and journey...:)
