Doing a new graduate program really depends on what area in nursing you're interested in working. As far as I know, it's rare for someone to be refused entry into a NGP, given our national shortage of RNs!
Your best bet would be to apply to a few different places, to maximise your chances of getting one if it really worries you. Make sure the program suits your needs (eg offers the rotations you'd like to try). Many graduate nurses are also not aware that they can apply for a GNP within the first 3 years of being registered. This way, you can work in different areas (general, mental health, peads) whist recieveing the support that is given in a NGP.
Again, it depends on the area you want to work in.
As Darren says, a GNP is not compulsory, though it is highly regarded if you want to work in a high acuity area.
