Hi there,

I'm a newbie, and I'm very happy to have found this forum :o)

I have just been accepted into the Div 2 course at Box Hill TAFE, YAY!!! I will be studying part-time and was wondering if someone could clarify some details for me.

Do you attend 9am-4pm? Or 9.30am start? And, do you ever finish early?

Also, do you do your practical placement in a 2 week block or a 4 week block? Once or twice per year?

I have also applied to RMIT but will not know if I have been accepted until mid Jan 2009. I'm kinda confident of getting a place so I need work out exactly where I would prefer to go. Any experiences to share?

The above questions also apply to RMIT if anyone has any info to share.

I need to accept/decline my Box Hill place next week (Dec 18th) so I'm a bit stressed about not knowing whether I will be offered a place at RMIT. From what I understand RMIT part-timers finish in about August of their 2nd year where as Box Hill go until Dec. Is that right? Argh, questions, questions!

Thanks in advance if you are able to help :o)

Either way, I am FINALLY going to begin this journey into my dream career, at the tender age of 36!! Shhhh.

Hey!!

I am now qualified but I did my div 2 at RMIT in bundoora. Hours were 9-4 and yes we did get to finish early...not all the time but often enough.

My course was without the meds so I can't say when it would be finished..all I can say is that we were done in 18 months..started in Feb 2007.

I had some ups and downs with them like all places but the lecturers are pretty good (if they are the same) and as long as you work hard and ask for help if you need it, then you will have no issues.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Keeshy, and congratulations on your qualifications.

Just wondering how your placements were worked out, did you do 4 placements per year for 2 weeks each?

Thanks

Jaydee well done on getting into the course. I just got accepted into VU for same course starting feb next year.

We also do 2 days 9-4.30 but have been told we may finish early now and then so it all sounds pretty standard I guess.

I would accept your placement at boxhill as you can always withdraw before actual enrolement. You dont want to miss out if you dont get a place at RMIT.

I would also maybe take into account the fees. Some tafes are more expensive than others, that may factor into your decision making.

I think there are a lot of mature age students taking up the DIV 2 course, I will be 29 in Feb and starting out so will be nearly 31 by the time I graduate. Oh well you are neber too old to learn.

GOod luck

Thanks for your reply deancy :o)

I phoned RMIT on Monday just to see if I could get a feel for what my chances were of getting a place. I would have accepted Box Hill and just waited for the RMIT offers, however I was required to pay the fees in total to Box Hill upon acceptance. I can't afford to lose this money at all and I didn't want to take someone else's place if I intended on withdrawing in Jan. Anyway ...... RMIT have given me a 'verbal offer', YAY!! Technically, it's not official until I get it in writing, but the course co-ordinator has told me that she has noted it (in big red pen) on the front of my file that I have been given a verbal offer. I'm pretty confident that nothing will change their decision between now and mid Jan.

I would have been happy to go to Box HIll (I have studied there before) but RMIT ws my first preference for a couple of reasons, mainly course duration and practical placement structure. The fees are similar.

Good luck at VU and congratulations on getting in. We'll have to trade stories next year :o)

Cheers

Jaydee congrats to you on getting in to RMIT..albeit unofficially ;)

Its how I got my offer too..over the phone verbally...then waited for my letter. Nothing changed in the meantime ;-)

Any advice or support you need or any questions you need to ask...Im here to fire away to. I can safely say I know what you will go through being that its where i studied..and so recently..so i assume little will have changed. I think you will really enjoy it.

Like all uni's and tafes, you will find you have moments where you get shitty with them or they seem unorganised..but overall I was happy and I think you will get alot out of it.

Have you met Vivienne yet? She is absolutely lovely and I think you will really like her.

Anyway let me know how you go when y ou start :-)

Keeshy,

Thanks, I'm really happy I've got an offer and I know where I'm going now. I'm so excited!

I know I'll have questions and need advice along the way so I'll know where to turn :o)

Ah yes Vivienne, she is lovely. She interviewed me and is actually who offered me the place. She was so helpful.

I start Feb 16th so the countdown is on, I'll let you know how I have settled in :o)

Hi Jaydee,

I only saw your posts now - I am a Div 2 student at Box Hill Tafe. I'm half way through the course, and I studied part time in 2008.

I've noticed you've accepted RMIT, so congrats to you for getting your preferred option! One thing I would point out is the course duration. Because of the medication endorsement being included in the course, Box Hill changed the length of the part time course from 1.5 yrs to nearly 2 yrs. It was annoying because when I initially applied, the website still promised 1.5yrs, and that was why I chose Box Hill over the other options I had. Just be wary that if RMIT is still promising 1.5yrs, that's pretty much impossible if it's to be delivered 2 days a week since the med module is time-heavy, and there are changes in other modules anyway. Just check with the staff there.

Having said that, I've only heard good things about the RMIT course, so sounds like you'll have a blast!

I've transferred to a Full Time group, so I'll be finished by July instead of December 2009. I'll be at Tafe 4 days a week, so I'm hoping I'll hold up okay!

Best of luck with the course. I remember this time last year I just couldn't wait to get started in Feb, buy the cool stuff on the lists like textbooks, stethoscope and sphygmo! I was part of a class of 60, so getting to know names took forever when I was just there 2 days a week. But you'll soon find a group you click with, and come study time, it will be handy to have people to study/panic with. :-)

I can't wait to get into the last half of my course and just get out there! Hope all goes well and keep us updated with your impressions along the way - I know when I was starting the course, I was hungry to read as much as I could about what it would be like. :-)

Hi SilverLining, thanks for your reply.

I double checked with RMIT about the course length and content before accepting and they said it would be Feb-Dec in 1st year and Feb-Aug in 2nd year, and definitely with meds endorsement. I also wonder how they manage to fit it all in when Box Hill go the whole 2 years, but I will see when I get there I suppose.

Congratulations on making it half way there! I hope you breeze through the last portion of your course and get out there soon. Like you said, I can't wait to get my hands on my booklist and stethoscope :o)

I'm sure I'll be back here with many questions soon. For now, I'm off an a family holiday, yay.

hi Jaydee,

my sister & I are thinking about applying to RMIT- we're waiting to see if they have a mid year course (although not confident they will). we can apply for others of course but location wise RMIT is only 10mins away from where we live so it would really be the best option for us.

can i ask are you studying full time or PT? and did it end up being only 2 days per week as you thought??

also how are you finding it? would love any info you are happy to pass on!

Cheers, Jules

Hi Jules, sorry it's taken me a while to reply.

I started the course in Feb. I'm doing part-time which is 2 days per week 9am-4pm for 18 months. During that time we do 8 weeks of full-time (5 days per week) placement in a health care setting. According to our timetable we will do 2 weeks in Aug, 1 week in Oct, 1 week in Dec, then next year we will have 2 weeks in April and 2 weeks in June, we finish the course in mid July.

I'm enjoying the course so far, I've wanted to do it for ages so I am motivated. There have been a few teething problems for a number of students with the place seeming generally unorganised but most of them have been sorted out by now. I think it's the same no matter where you go. It will be interesting to see if they manage to get our placements sorted!!

They normally offer a mid-year intake, what makes you doubt they will this year? Have you heard/read something? I hope they do for your sake. It will be nice to have studdy buddy in your sister!

If you have any other specific questions just ask. As I said, so far so good for me :o)

Good luck

Hi Jaydee, Silverlining, Jules74

This is Bee, I am new to this forum.

I am interested to study nursing course, and wondering if you can give me some advice.
I am 40yrs old now, have no nursing background, is there an age limit to be a nurse? I am interested to do the nursing course in RMIT Bundoora, because it's near to my place. What is the entry requirement, and how much is the tuition fees, duration of course, etc...

Appreciate if you could give some sharing.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,
Bee
