Hi all;

So I'm SERIOUSLY considering becoming a nurse, but as a 46yo male I'm concerned I'm too old to learn the myriad of medical & technical terms required.

I guess I'd like to know how hard is the studying? Considering it's been like 30years since I've spent any decent amount of time in a classroom Im worried in case its too much.

Homework in year 11 is no doubt a different league to what is ahead of me should I decide to move forward.

Any words of encouragement or study tips would be appreciated. I believe my only barriers are my own self esteem! :-)

Cheers

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

I too am a mature age student (35) a mum to 3 kids under 9 and I have just finished my first semester as a full time student studying nursing at Uni. Yes it is hard, but so worth it! I love the challenge that Uni brings and nursing is a great career to get into. There is heaps of help for us oldies and young alike. Have you considered doing TPP? (Tertiary Preparation Pathway). This is a bridging course of such where you brush up on skills before you enter University life. I personally didn't do it but I know of others that swear by it. Best of luck in your decision! I think you may have answered your own question in that you are the only one holding yourself back. Go for it!

Hi Nigel

I to am a 46 YO male and have found it really surprisingly manageable. I also have not studied since the early 90's. I have been studying external and should finish next year. I alway found there to be a great deal of support and encouragement the whole way and and as you do clinical placements the terms will begin to make sense.

give it a crack you have nothing to lose

Hi, I am very old!!!!! 52 yo and love studying nursing!!!! Not sure if anyone will employ me??? I finish studying as an EN at the end of this year. I am considering studying to become a RN but not sure yet. Don't let anything stop you, all the more mature aged students at our facility are the highest achievers!!!!

Hi All,

I'm 50 and also considering a diploma in nursing next year. Just like to say it's really encouraging to hear your stories and views and I'm so relieved that I'm not the only "oldie" out there with ambition and a desire to return to study. Like I read earlier elsewhere age is nothing more than a number.

Where are you all studying? I'm in Melbourne and am currently sifting through the myriad of providers available.
