Hi all,

I am a 30 year old mother of a 6yo little boy. I am wanting to become an EEN. Does anyone have advice as to how to cope with a full time job (administration), a house, a child and study. Also can anyone in Sydney suggest a course that can be done via correspondence? Would love to hear others experience.

Thanks

Hi Kristy,

I don’t know too much about EEN courses, especially correspondence, and if you’re able to apply for uni, I would go for an RN degree anyway, but I can answer the rest of your question. I am in my 3rd and final year of my degree which I attend fulltime. When I started, I was working fulltime, but that was way too much so I dropped back to part-time work. I was reluctant to do my degree part-time as I am 38 and I want to get qualified ASAP. I realise that may not be possible for you though.

My partner works fulltime and we have a 3 year old daughter, a mortgage, pets, vehicles, busy lives…etc, and it’s really hard. Particularly when unpaid clinical placement comes around. But it is rewarding and I believe the hard work will pay off when I finish. I mentioned the option of going for RN above because in the grand scheme of things, there is not that much more time involved (1 – 1&1/2 extra years FT), but you’ll have so many more options when you finish. Good luck with which ever path you choose, and enjoy it.

Regards,
Jan

Hi Kristy and to all

I as well am trying to find out all I can about becoming a EEN. I am 37 and live on the Gold Coast. I have a Husband and 3 children (13,4 & 3)and would love to get back into the work force BUT I dont know the way to go, I am really confussed. I dont want to go to Uni for 3 years to become an RN, I dont think I could cope with that and my family, so I am thinking this is the next best thing..What does everyone think??? I have a sister who is an RN in Brissy and she is trying to talk me out of it(she is single though and has no commitments). It is not the money I am looking for because my husband has a good paying job, it is just getting out into the workforce and doing something I hopefully will love without all the responsibility of an RN. Also is there anyone doing this course on the Coast?? Would love to Chat and get some info. Cheers Charligirl

hi charligirl. Try ringing up Griffith uni coz they have a gold coast campus.

More and more now a days, EENs are getting more employable coz of the fact that we have an RN shortage. As long as one RN is on the ward then thats the main thing and then they use up EENs and stuff.

Pity you werent aware of the RCNA nursing expo that was held a few weekends ago in Brisbane, coz i went there with mum coz she wants to get back into nursing as well. Now is the time to get back into it.

Also EENs are almost as accountable for everything as RNs, everyone is accountable for their own actions.
