Hi, i am a 21 year old with a 16 month old and have finally mapped out my goal for my future!! i will be applying this week to hopefully get into do the Cert IV in nursing at my local TAFE fulltime. the course starts in july 2010, but i will also be applying to do a 2 month short bridging course as i have no history/experience in this field. From there my plan is to apply at La Trobe for the Post Grad Nursing (2years full time), and then graduate Midwifery (1 year full time). basically, my question is: is there anyone in a similar situation, and even more so, doing it with kids? how have you found the work load/ placements throughout your studies??

I know PLENTY of people doing nursing studies with kids. A colleague of mine has three kids under the age of five. Dear god I don't know how she does it but she's focussed.

Don't want to burst your bubble but you can't do post grad until you have a graduate degree. That's why they call it Post Grad..

The graduate entry nursing programme at LaTrobe requires a degree or its equivalent as part of admission (as do other courses of this kind) and a Cert IV is not an equivalent. Mind you there are bachelor degree programmes that do allow those with prior study (eg. EEN) to gain advanced standing in an undergraduate degree.

I'm doing my placement for my qualification at the moment and I find I have to be super organised with my time. I haven't watched tv for a month and the only time I have spare at the moment is Sunday afternoons. I usually catch up on sleep then - hard if you have a child no doubt.

hi ear11,
firslty i think its fantastic that youve got a plan set out. the only way to get somewhere is to have clear goals set out in front of you so you know what your aiming fo- and it soulnds like youve done alot of thinking on the subject already.

so once you do the Cert IV in nursing, you can then apply for the 2yr 'conversion' Div 1 course at any uni that offers it. if your in Melbourne, then RMIT Bundoora also offers the 2 year degree if you are an EN/Div 2. and then as youve mentioned once your a Div 1, you can do the 1 year midwifery post grad course.

there are plenty of mums who study nursing, so if you are keen to do nursing then go for it. as long as your have some good support around you for when you need it im sure you'll be fine. dont let people talk you out of it if you really want to do it. the biggest part of getting thru is having the determination to finish and not giving up. just make sure you use your spare time wisely, and if you need help dont be afraid to ask for it!!

its an exciting time, deciding to study takes your life off in a new direction..best of luck!

Hi Ear11

Good luck!! I've just applied to do mid entry to dip nursing at TAFE. Fingers crossed...

I'm very nervous too, as I've got a 1 year old and a 3 year old.

Wishing you all the best
