I am a deferred 3rd year student at unisa's city east campus and whilst I am sure of the exact nature of this incidence I myself have experienced a range of issues myself during my studies at this university including:

* no contact AT ALL with facilitator during three week placement in 2nd year in a regional SA location

* The same facilitator in question above finally appearing during the next sememster's placement in another regional location only to discover, said individual was a) a lecturer at whyalla campus, b) an after hours coordinator at local hospital and c) also our facilitator creating a major issue of conflict of interest when several of us raised serious concerns regarding our preceptors level's of performance (or lack their of)

* A mid semseter exam consisting of 40 mutiple choice questions of which at least half contained gramatical and/ or clinical errors. minimal ackowledgement of errors at all little alone readjustment of marks.

* recieveing an email from a course coordinator not so subtly suggesting we avoid giving negative feedback in the end of sememster cei's (course evaluation instrument) as this reflect negativley on the university!

* portion of student quota routinley being without placements until the 11th hour due to lack of forward planning.

* Many, many more issues.............

I wish I could say the exam "stuff up" was a one off but can't................maybe now they have been 'named and shamed' through the media they finally get their act together.......stranger things have happened!

Hey NurseMorgan, your views are not just related to SA, the same problems exist in Vic. At a Melbourne Uni, I would have things like commas crossed out yet exam papers or scenarios were full of both gramm/spelling errors i.e. they were talking about a patient who had been deibbrilated, I would presume they had been defibrillated etc. Exam papers in particular were dreadful, but oh boy the student has no chance to err. Hope that you are not deferring for long.

Regards

I was interested in continuing my nursing degree at university of south australia as I am unhappy with the undergraduate nursing degree at my uni, Edith Cowan University in Perth. I found that the unsa has about 4 - 6 semesters per year and alot of the courses are external. I put alot of effort into my degree, achieving high marks and participating in remote nursing projects that cost me alot of money, which I didn't really have to do. I was failed in my last prac, a really complex theatre prac which I had no choice in doing with bullying preceptors. They gave me no clear reason why I failed, they said i did not learn it as quicly as other graduates. But I am not even a graduate.I have to wait another year to do it again which I think is shocking. I have not failed anything at uni before. If this nursing course makes students wait a year before repeating a unit I don't think it should be accredited.

I also think the precepting system is a bit dodgy as alot of preceptors arn't really trained in workplace training and assessment and these are the people our careers rely on. Also, their should be more scholarships (or payment) available for students doing their nursing pracs, especially the full time pracs. We still have to eat, pay rent and car payments etc.

So I understand your disatisfaction, my uni too does not finalise some prac placements till the last minute, but this is also a problem with the hospitals.

Maybe we should swap uni's, I think mine still has places left.
