Hello everyone,
I am having a bit of a dilemma at the moment. I am currently studying veterinary nursing full time and am not enjoying it as much as I thought I would/as much as others in my class seem to be enjoying it. Throughout my school years I had always been flipping up between a career in psychology, division 2 nursing and veterinary nursing. At the start of year 12 I was leaning more towards div 2 nursing or psychology, however last minute I chose veterinary nursing as I thought the uni course for psych would be too hard/stressful. I am now wondering if I should have chosen a career in the fields of mental health nursing as I have always been interested and intruiged by mental disorders.
I am a very gentle, patient and compassionate person. Some of the areas I don't enjoy about veterinary nursing are:
- Monitoring anaesthetics (very stressful)
- Placing and taking out endotracheal tubes
- Knowing how to set up and work anaesthetic machines and IV fluid pumps.
I do however enjoy the basic caring part and I definitely don't mind the cleaning.
I would really appreciate replies/advice from people who:
- Have been in a simlar experience/know of people who have been.
- Are currently studying nursing or are enrolled nurses (could you please tell me what a typical day is like, if possible)
- Are currently going into or are in the field of mental health nursing.
Sorry for the long post guys, thanks for reading though.

Have you started your course yet, Danii? If so, I'd love to know how you're finding it!

Hi Tilly,

I'm actually a certificate IV qualified Vet Nurse, and have been working in the industry for the last 6 years. However, I made the decision at the end of last year to do a Bachelors of Nursing at ACU. There are lots of reasons for it, but mainly I felt as a VN I wasn't challenged enough and what you are taught at TAFE is only surface knowledge, and you can never truly get involved in patient care. You just do what the Vet tells you, at least in my experience. I also think the pay is horrendous and it just isn't something you can stick with long term. I'd always had an interest in disease processes, science, anantomy and physiology and figured a Bachelors of Nursing would suit me best. I also had absolutely no interest in becoming a Vet.

So, if I was you I'd go with Div 2. I just think nursing offers so much more in so many ways.

Good luck!
