I am just about to complete my enrolment for Dip Nursing through GCIT and I have to nominate three sites for both aged care and acute placements. Here in Melbourne I seem to get the same response through the health care networks - As a single student studying online, due to the number of students already in the system, there is basically no chance of gaining a clinical placement within a healthcare network in the foreseeable future.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do, or who to speak to about this?

I had the same problem but in Sydney (mainly with acute care) I rang all the hospitals in Sydney as well as the Illawarra (Wollongong) and at the end of the day was so depressed I rang GCIT to ask them who other students had gone through. They told me that I didn't need to ring the hospitals myself and that they will organise it as long as I gave them the name of hospital/aged care organisation & number they will contact them. I've only just started (November) so fingers crossed I can get a placement.

Thanks for that. I might just get the details of the nurse education department in the main hospitals near me and supply them. Now to scout out aged care facilities.....

I found the aged care centres the easiest whereas the hospitals didn't want to know about it.

The health care networks did not want to know me - not even the one I already work for....

One aged care place was positively enthusiastic to have me - probably because they dont get too many males doing placements there.

In the end I just named the three main health care networks in my area, placed the enthusiastic aged care place on the top of the list and added two other places that didnt say no.
