Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me ... I'm half way through first year of my bachelor of nursing degree and am looking to start work in a field relevent to my study in order to get a feel for the practical work ahead of clinical placements next year. I'm wondering what I can do at this stage, eg. Personal Care, AIN work? I would much rather work in a hospital setting, rather than aged or disability care, however, so long as I could get some good experience interacting with people in a health care environment I would be happy. Anyway, can anyone tell me what sort of position is it suitable for me to apply for at this stage in my education?

Thanks,

Lizzie

Hello LizzieW ! There is plenty of work in Aged Care. Mostly Nursing Students do work as Personal Care and AIN work. Ring up around your area were you live to Age Care Homes and if you are very interested in Hospital setting ring up Hospitals I am sure there is also plenty of work as PCA or AIN. Both places will be suitable in your education.

Thanks Molly - do you know if there is a minimum level of education I need to have reached already or if I need to have any actual qualification? As I mentioned, I am only half way through first year - I do not have any Certificate qualifications etc, just the knowlege from what we have covered so far at uni - obviously I do have a senior first aid and CPR cert, and have an understanding of the priciples of manual handling etc, I just want to be sure that I'm not applying for anything that I'm actually not yet qualified to do.

Hello Lizzy, I am studying a Diploma of nursing P/T at the moment and we have been told that after our first clinical placement that we are able to get a job in aged care as an AIN not only for the experience but also that way we are able to claim alot of our expenses through tax. We have our first prac in November. I am unsure if it is the same for you but you should ring around to see. Maybe the Australian Nursing Midwifery Council.

Good luck

Hello LizzieW ! As a friendly suggestion do your a senior first aid and CPR that is a plus to her future work. Mostly nursing student do PCA/AIN in Aged Care. Do not worry, you will be trained on the job, they will not let you start on her own until you you are trained as long as you are a quick learned and willing to do the job right, willing to work, be reliable, have hands on approach ( not folding your hand ) Go for it, do not be shy. Manual handling knowledge is a great start and you will get some training by a Physio before you start your training as a PCA/AIN. Hope this will be a great help. If you have any more questions I am very happy to answer them.

Hi Lizzie,

I'm a first year student too & in Brisbane. In my limited exposure to hospitals, I've found that is that it's who you know, not what you know. I work as an AIN at one of the large hospitals in the ED, which is great for experience and my aim is to work there as an EEN & RN down the track.

If you want to work in a hospital, have a look at the QLD health employment sight & try to find out who the NUMs are for the areas in a hospital you'd like to work in.. approach them directly if you can.

There are heaps of jobs in aged care, either through an agency or directly. A school mate's started a job today as an AIN in aged care. Agencies want you to have completed your first placement prior to working for them.. not sure about an aged care facility. Good Luck out there.
