Hi guys, I'm a 33 yr old male who is interested in getting into this field of work. I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences or info regarding men taking on this line of work. I imagine it is a fairly female dominated? My uncle worked in aged care and looked after my nan for many years, he appeared to enjoy it and was a typical aussie larakin so the seniors took to him really well. I cant ask him about his work now as he has passed on but I was just looking for some feedback/experiences from some of you who have witnessed or talked to any guys who have taken on this career path.

Thanks

Go for it Para, there are heaps of men in aged care. You'll be surprised by how many men work in nursing and the number is increasing. Wo';t dispute the fact that its generally female dominated but the ratio of men to women are about 1:6. Good luck and welcome to health care. :)

Yep I've worked with lots of guys in the field of aged care. In fact, some of them are the best carers I've come across. It IS still female dominated, but it is certainly common nowadays for men to work in these jobs. Go for it!

Hello Para. It is warming to hear you would like to enter into looking after older adults. It IS very rewarding and the male care givers have something special to lend to this very important area of nursing. The male residents often like to have other males to 'banter' with, so I would say 'go for it' and follow your wish. I work with several male caregivers and they are all wonderful in their own way. It is a very demanding area of work, but a VERY rewarding path.
