I did Cert III in aged care last year and was constantly told by our teachers what a shortage of workers there is in aged care. We were told we would have no problem getting a job and that everyone from the last group got a job. Well, I am now doing nursing but I have looked at the job vacancies every week since I did my course. I have not seen a single aged care job in my location that doesn't require one year minimum paid work experience. How are you supposed to get one year of experience if no one will take you on? I did the 120 hours of work placement and feel very confident in my abilities, but how do you get a start in this job?

Hi, my advice is to not bother with the adverts. Just send or take a copy of your resume to all aged care facilities in which you are interested. A lot of them don't have to advertise because potential staff approach them in this way. Good luck!!!

My facility advertises that they want 2 years experience but they take people fresh outta the course if they interview well and can speak english.

I'm in Bris/Gold Coast area, Qld, but I would imagine that nursing homes are the same whereever you are. If you have the qualifications then approach the facilities yourself. Do a little online research of the company and learn about accreditation, acfi, duty of care, manual handling, documentation etc as this is what you will be asked at interviews. Advertised jobs are such a small percentage of the job market, you could be waiting for a long time. Also, a lot of nursing homes have expressions of interest on their websites.

The aged care facility where I work more or less would rather tak eon somebody that basically knocks the door or they ask carers they have if they know of anybody, reason being it cost them a lot of money to put an ad in the paper.

HI Enigma
I have worked in Aged care, never had a problem finding work. Send your resume out to all your favourite places - including where you did your work experience.

Be positive. When you are been interviewed you need to focus the point in front of interviewer that how would you get a paid experience unless someone hire you as an employee. Getting a good paid job is always a question for the fresher. My point is not to give up. Try and try hard until you succeed. Who knows which aged care have a place vacant for the candidates like you.

My facility most of the staff are from gumtree Advertised and it is free, there is no need to pay lots money in the paper. You can place your own AD on gumtree for free, see how you go.

Just send them your resume and be confident. I'm sure at least one aged care establishment will check you out.

Well, since I wrote the initial post in 2010, I have become a nurse. I am an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse and am working in Aged Care. I ended up joining an agency and working as a PCA whilst doing my nursing course. I found it easier to get work as a nurse in aged care than as a carer actually. Thanks everyone for your input.
