VERBAL
Is used convey wants/needs and empower the clients with self-determination. Eg, “what would you like for dinner Mr Jones? I would like soup thank you”
WRITTEN
Is predominately used for record keeping and to pass on changes/concerns of the client’s wellbeing to other staff members. Eg, Mr Jones is feeling down today
FACIAL EXPRESSION
Can be used to convey simple messages of behaviour approval/disapproval. Eg smiling a lot when a child with autism does a class activity.
*on a personal note, I found putting on a sad face works a lot better than an angry/grumpy when dealing with a client with autism*
BODY LANGUAGE
Is highly emotive and convey the clients moods. Eg when Jones was upset he walked with his arms stiff and straight and he was happy he would swing them as he walked.
*after spending lots of time with a client you will pick up their tells in their body language*
SIGNING
Is useful to convey a visual message to someone who might be deaf or have trouble hearing. It is good practice to mouth what you are signing while you are doing it as some clients will be able to lip read.
TOUCH
Touch can be comforting or it can be used to grab attention,
SYMBOLS AND PICTURES
Very useful in conveying common phases to a child or a client with dementia
*personal note: I kept a set of common phase cards in my carer bag*
