Hi,

I have just enrolled in a Certificate III in an Aged Care course studying online part time. I am waiting on the paperwork to be sent to me so I haven't started as yet but I'm really excited about it. I was wondering what qualifications I would need to be an Enrolled Rurse. I would imagine I need a Certificate IV in Aged Care at least but what else would I need? Or what is the most common courses people do after completing Certificate III in Aged Care? I was wondering what I should aim towards.

Im in my early 30s and currently work in Administration. I have read some messages with people in similar situations as myself, I cant afford to study full time or attend classes being single and paying off a mortgage.

From what I have read to be a Registered Nurse I would need a Bachelor of Nursing which is a fulltime course which runs for 3 years. To be a Enrolled Nurse would I need to get a Bachelor of Nursing?

Another thing I was curious about which is hard to explain. I was wondering if I started working fulltime in Aged Care, then started studying online part time for a Certificate IV in Aged Care would I be able to claim my working experience as placement work for the course?

Cheers,

Sally

Hi Sally

To be an AIN in an aged care facility you would certainly need a Certificate 3 in Aged Care and in some cases you could be hired if you have a Certificate 3 in Home and Community Care as many of the modules in both courses are the same.

As for the Certificate 4 in Aged Care, it's not mandatory that you have one to work either as an AIN or a EEN. I've considered doing the Cert 4 myself but from I've heard from several people now that it doesn't make any real difference to the responsibilities of an AIN nor is it a pathway into the Diploma of Nursing which you would need to become a EEN, this Diploma course runs for 18 months to 2 years and this can be done at a TAFE college, other private vocational colleges such as Careers Australia, Health Skills Australia and the like, some hospitals also offer this course at least here in Brisbane. You will not need to attend university to do this course and although you will be doing a lot the same work as an RN you will be doing so under the supervision of an RN as an RN has more responsibility and authority than a EEN does.

You are correct in saying that you need a Bachelor of Nursing to become an RN which is a university course.

In terms of your Cert 4 that you want to do, if you're working part time or casual (there is no such thing as full time in nursing) and have your Cert 3 in Aged you will only be able to get RPL for any modules you've done but if you're doing modules in a Cert 4 that you wouldn't do be doing in Cert 3 then you would generally have to do the full placement but I would strongly suggest you speak with your Facility Manager and Trainers at the college you're doing your course through.

I hope this helps?
