Sophie I am so sorry you have had such an uninspiring and negative introduction to aged care in this work placment.

I tend to feel your buddy is not suitable, she obviously has minimal understanding of her role as a buddy.

Sure we cannot afford to make errors when working in aged care and policies and procedures need to be adhered to but your buddy should be leading by example and encouraging you to take on tasks with her being a guide and support.

It is natural to feel nervous and apprehensive but if you are feeling 'stressed' then I would urge you to rethink whether this is the path you wish to travel as stress unfortunately can be problematic, not only for you, but also to your colleagues and the residents as it has an impact on all those whom you encounter.

Older people do not need to have 'stressed people' around them- their systems are not as resilient and they take longer to recover.

I would suggest you speak to your clinical preceptor, or your trainer and assessor, and inform them of your situation and they will address it.

I am an experienced RN Div 1, Trainer and Assessor and also DON of a nursing home.
