Hi there

Well I am in a small dilemma. A part of me really wants to come back home to Brisbane and work as a RN. Instead of staying in Canada doing crummy jobs. As you are aware Canada's legislation requires International Nurses to upgrade if they havent done Obstetrics or Pediatrics. These two courses are done via distance education whilst in Canada. Clinical practicals 2 weeks long once passing theory. No clinical labs as it is distance education. It does seem interesting. A few assessments of this course require: answering critical thinking questions, Article Critique Assignment and Nursing Care Plan assignment.

During the clinical practice once passing, you get preceptored for 2 weeks, however the tutor of this course advises by the 4th on the 1st week you gain independence. During first week of any clinical placement that I have done I am trying to find my feet. so not sure what to make of the 4th day.

This would be a good opportunity but I am also wondering about the Midwifery courses in Australia. Griffith University seems like a good program but Research nursing was not my cup of tea and I see that there is Quantitative Research and Qualitative Research.

So really I am not sure what to do, stay in Canada and do the Obstetric course in 4 months or come back to Oz and do a fulfilling course in midwifery ??? Options options and yet they are both intriguing.

Any advice I would appreciate, thank you.

ooo an ausie working in canada...thats what i want to do.

hehe yeah i want to do midi next year, but i looked at QUT and instantly said no when i saw that they make you do a research approaches unit ewk...had enough of that as undergrad...no mor thanks..want to learn more about midwifery not research.

I think ACU is one of the best unis for midwifery. My mentor from uni was a midwife at Royal Brisbane and said CQU and QUT students work 5 shifts a fortnight as a studnt midwife adn then do study, and dont have much time to do another job. ITs good that they employ and pay you to be a student. Im not sure if ill do it in brisbane or melbourne, it depends on what hospital i can get.

Don't know why unis are so into research for practical jobs. If you want to learn how to research, well then go to the next level; a masters or something.

I found the information re: Canada really interesting. Was it hard to get into a hospital? What are your patients like? Is there much difference between the way they nurse, and the way we nurse? Stupid question maybe, but how important is French?

Hello NC users,
I am from SA & have been living in Finland with my Finnish partner for 7 months. I am 25 & I have finally decided what I wanted to do with my career path. Study here is FREE & Nursing programs are in English, the catch for me is that Basic level 1 & 2 Finnish Language is a requirment for the practicals obviously. I am working a real unsatisfing job but have accepted it for now, it has really motivated me to persue my potential in a special way (NURSING). I have been working in a nursing home since 2003 & I enjoy it very much. Unfortunatly it is BACK BREAKING!!!! My sister is a nurse & a wonderful one at that. I envy her work very much!
SO...... I NEED HELP TO GET THERE
I need a external course via Australia where I can defere my pracs???? Is its to much to ask?
OR
Study in Finland with an agreement with Uni SA to defer my pracs to Australia OR UK at later date???
I just don't know.
Do I have to be in Australia to apply?
I would APPRECIATE AN INFO PLEEEASE
I had hoped to return to Australia after 12 months to study but its only fair to stay in here for my partners sake for a while longer.
Anyway I hope for some feedback

Hi
I am a Licensed practical nurse in Canada and have moved to Oz to do my RN. Canada has lots of nursing jobs if you can fill the requirements of the nurse’s registration board. The hospitals are really modern and filled with new technology. The hardest part of becoming a nurse is getting your registration. The pay starts around $30 per hour and goes up to $38. You don’t get as much paid vacation and it gets really cold in the winter around -40 sometimes. Snow is a definite issue and because of this your car insurance is huge dollars ($1800 per year for fully comp on new car). French is not an issue as long as you don’t live in Quebec.

Hello Crazycat, if you about to visit for Canada for study or job purposes then I will really would like to tell you that the city <a href="http://www.fortmcmurraysocial.com/">Fort Mcmurray<>/a is in boon this time for both things. One thing more important which can work you that I also have been relocated for some elsewhere in Canada and it is really romantic to work in this city.
