I'm an EEN who is wanting to go on and do my bachelor of nursing, but also do bachelor of midwifery at the same time.

I am wanting to know which uni is the best to do studies externally through.

I am tossing up between CDU and CSU? But I'm still not sure.

I have heard quite a few bad things about UoSA?

I live in a small rural town in Victoria (Avenel) which is about 1 hour 30mins north of Melbourne. I work at a low care aged care home, but have found there are not many opportunities for EEN's around my area and would have to travel 1hr+ to get an ideal job in an acute setting.

I really need just a good overview of uni's that offer external studies, so as I'm able to match best to me. I don't want to end up being made to travel a whole heap to another state, and I ones advice on how anyone else has coped working and studying by correspondence.

Please help!!

Hi, I have been an EN for 16 years and have just enrolled to do my Bach of Nursing through CSU in Bathurst, they have a very good reputation for distance education, I have two small children and a part-time job so I will be studying by distance and I'm very excited to be upgrading my qualifications.

My first residential school is for 2 days in Bathurst in Feb and then not again until August for another 3 days. I think this is reasonable for first year, I don't want to be away from my kids too often. I can do my exams where I live (Coffs Harbour, NSW). They allow up to 5 years to complete the degree, and you can do one subject or 4 each semester, depending how quickly you want to get through it. I've started with 2 and I will see how I go. Some Uni's won't offer credits for being an EN or EEN which to me is just crazy, but I was able to get a good credit package for being an EN.

I'm not sure about Uni in Victoria, but I just wanted to share with you and hope you find something that suits you. Good luck.

Check to see how much credit you get. At CSU, if it the "old" Cert IV that you received when you did EN, then I think you only get 4 subjects off and up to 8 subjects off if you have the new diploma (don't quote me on that, check their handbook for specifics). CQU's nursing by distance program is pretty good and I think they are more credit friendly (I think it is 18 months off for the new EN diploma, once again, don't quote me), so look around and it might save you 6 months and several $K in HECS.

Sorry, double checked and was wrong: only 1 year's credit for the Diploma of Nursing at CQU. On the bright note though, I just saw that they now do a combo EN/RN course over 3.5yrs by distance since they are now both a TAFE and a uni. Pity you now can't be both enrolled and registered at once according to the Board.

CDU give a years credit for the diploma, and there are heaps of people in Melbourne studying through them (myself included).  If you'd like to know any more please pm me.
