Can any one give me a few heads up on what to expect to prepare myself for placement in aged care as a EN(med). I have completed AIN course that required placement of 40 hrs, but that is my limit of knowledge.

Hi there, it will vary as to where you do the placement and what tafe you are studying through, but you will always be working with an RN whilst on duty. On my placement a few years ago now,(was at the end of my studies) i had a sheet of tasks i had to complete whilst on placement, e.g admimistration of medication, administration of insulin, education of how to use asthma medication and breathing devices appropriately, perform a basic dressing ,do an intramuscular injection, do observations, ect ect, which had to be witnessed and signed by an RN when they deemed me competent. I looked for oppertunities to perform all the tasks to use the time well in the shift. If your on your first placement though, it is unlikely you would do meds as you wouldnt have covered the study modules first???You will usually only do at placement what you have already studied in the classroom. Other than this, you would follow your RN around and be her/his shadow for the day, they will teach you all they can and give you basic nursing tasks you either feel competent to perform, or you need to be signed off as competent on. It depends state to state wether or not you will be asked to do personal care and bed making, ect ect. Just use the time to learn as much as possible from experienced nurses around you,and ask lots of questions! Hope this helps you in some way!

Thanks for taking the time to reply and the insight of what to expect. I have just completed my placement and found it very similar to my aged care placement but a bit more paper work and what you call the basic nursing tasks ( I hope one day to be able to say that too) and a facilitator by my side who was wonderful. As you said I worked my way through the compentencies and had them signed off. I'm studying at a very small TAFE in QLD with seventeen other students and one very hard working dedicated teacher. Only five in the class don't work in the industry and I'm one of them, so my experience is nil. Today I recieved the second semester books and assignments and felt sick. I worked very hard in semester one to cut the mustard but I'm going to have to find some extra sauce to complete this one. Once again thanks for your time.
