Hi guys

Finally, after my first post back in February I have just received an offer to study Diploma of EN at Challenger TAFE Fremantle in Semester 2! All enrolled today and ready to start in 4 weeks.

Just interested if any is also starting in Semester 2 or even if anyone has studied through Challenger who might be able to give me some extra info.

So excited to finally starting to fulfill my dream ... only applied 20 years ago - so it is about time!

Cheers
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
Congrats on getting into the course you must be very excited. I'm sorry I can't answer your question for you but I was wondering if you could answer mine. I'm also mature age and considering applying for the course. Are you studying full time and if so what days have you been given. I love the thought of doing the course I'm just a bit frightened at the thought of studying. My grades in math and english were not too good at school so I'm not sure how I would go in the course. Did you have to sit any type of pre test or did you jut go straight for the course?

Hi Kate

My course starts on 25th July and I am on campus in Fremantle Tues, Thu and Fri pretty much 9am-3pm with a couple of extra days in the semester. So the hours are pretty good - particularly to try and work around my kids. I know that it will take a bit of juggling and my husband is going to have to help out a fair bit - but he has know for over 20 years that this is what I wanted to do - so he is being very supportive.

I have done a fair bit of study since leave school 20 years ago - so I am not too worried about coping with that side of things. I have also worked in aged care about 15 years ago - so I have a bit of experience in that area too - although now I am an accountant - so still a big change!

I didn't do maths in year 12 and didn't get great results overall. However, because I have done other studies since year 12 so they don't take my Year 12 results into consideration. You could think about doing a Certificate IV in Preparation For Entry Into Enrolled Nursing to help you with that. A Certificate IV gives you automatic entry (in regards to educational requirements) into the Diploma of EN. I completed this course earlier this year to help me get in and also to give me a bit of an intro into what I will be studying in Diploma. I did mine externally through CY O'Connor TAFE - so I was able to complete it whilst still working. I found it very easy and completed it in less than 8 weeks - although you have 6 months to offically complete it.

Then, when I applied for the Diploma a few months ago I got 100/100 for my selection criteria to get in - as the Cert IV gave me top marks together with my work experience over the last 20 years since leaving school.

I didn't need to sit any special tests for english or maths because I had the Cert IV - but I believe you can go that way too - might have to speak to TAFE about that.

The next intake isn't until February 2012 now - so it gives you plenty of time to sort out what you need to get in. Good luck! Go for it I say. I am 37 this year and I feel like now is the right time...

Cheers

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks so much for your replies I really appreciate it! As for the part time course I’m not sure if they make it well known to everyone because we I originally called up to ask about the course the man I spoke to said they only do it full time. I looking into another course and the lady in charge of that told me about the part time diploma EN. As I mentioned you have to be working in the aged care or the disability field and have your certificate III in Aged care or disability. I spoke to Leonie ay Central TAFE and her number is 94273776 if you want to call her.
I’m going to do my Cert III in disability through CY O’Connor TAFE like you and do I online. Hopefully I will be ok with it being online and not face to face. As I said before I’m new to all of this.
I was just wondering if you might know the books you need for the diploma yet, I was hoping to get a heads up and sort looking through the books before I enrol in Feb.

Thanks again Rebecca,

Kate

Kate

Thanks for that information about Central TAFE. Unfortunately I am not working in the field at the moment - so I will have settle with the full time course - but good to know!

I am sure you will be okay with studying online. HOWEVER, I must warn you that I found CY O'Conner absolutely appaulling to study through. Totally unorganised and they always took a long time to get things to me (I even drove there once to Northam to pickup things so I could get them organised!). I then had to drive there a second time when I had finished my course to do the exams/presentations. I don't know if that applies for the Cert III you will be doing.

They also took a long time to get assignments back to me. But I guess if you start now you have quite a few months to get it finished before you apply for the Diploma.

They offered me a spot in their Diploma program to start immediately (back in April when I finished my Cert IV) but I very quickly declined because I couldn't BARE studying through them any longer! I hope you have a better experience than me! At the end of the day I got the Cert IV that I needed to get into the Diploma - hopefully Challenger TAFE will be a bit better.

I did find it a bit tricky to study externally through them - mainly because the instructions I received (both in the texts and online) were difficult to follow. I would suggest if you have any queries just pickkup the phone and ring them. I tried to work it out on my own and ended up doing way more than I had to.

In regards to the books for the Diploma - no, I won't be receiving that until the 1st day on 25th July. Doesn't really give me any opportunity to have a look beforehand either - it is very frustrating!

Good luck with it all!

Cheers
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks so much for the heads up on CY O’Connor fingers crossed I don’t have the same experience and hopefully I will get it all done before I go to enrol for the diploma.
I just found out that I need to go to an information day for the EN diploma which will be great to find out all the info involved in the course. I was told that there will be a competency test that I will have to sit before I enrol. Did you have to do this test? If so would you mind giving me a heads up if you don’t mind.

Thanks again Rebecca,

Kate
