Hi

I'm Toni, I'm 37 and I just found out that I got accepted into the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing/Division 2 at Gold Coast Tafe.

It came as a bit of a shock really, I had applied back in 2007 through Qtac, but was told my score wasn't good enough. But last Thursday I got a phone call saying I had gotten through. I had almost given up completely.

So.... Wow !

Here I am about to become an Enrolled Nursing student, I am as nervous as all heck and not really sure what to expect.

So who here can tell me what to expect???

Don't get me wrong I am really looking forward to this, it has been a dream for a long time..and now its coming true.

Oh and I start tomorrow, 3rd of Feb 09.

Cheers Toni :)

Hi Wolfette,

Congratulations on getting into the course. I am also studying the Diploma of Enrolled nursing at Gold coast tafe. I am 6 months into the course, so I will graduate at the end of this year.

How have you found the first few days? It can be a little overwhelming at first. Let me know if you have any questions, i'd be happy to help.

Good luck with the course.

we started with 1st aid and are now studying anatomy and physiology, OHS, care older patient, basic nursing care, communications in nursing and infection control at the moment.

I am just making sure I do work every night to keep on top of things... I think it would be easy to fall behind and very hard to catch up

good luck with it

In first semester we studied Anatomy and Physiology, Law and Ethics, care of older clients, communication and fundamentals. Like deancey said its really a good idea to do work each night so that it doesn't become too overwhelming. Our first placement was in aged care for two weeks at the end of the semester. In second semester we are now studying acute and complex conditions as well as medications and calculations and i will begin placement in the hospital in a few weeks for 2 days a week.

Hope that helped. Good luck to everyone doing the course.

Thankyou SO MUCH to all of you whom have been kind enough to reply.

As you may have seen in another post i did earlier today - i have been accepted to GCIT - to start on monday!

More than a lil nervy, in need of as much info, happy stories and encouragement as possible, and also any info on reasonably priced accommodation for when i need to come down for Res School.

Again - thanks everyone.

Hi Guys

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.

On Tuesdays we have a Anatomy and Physiology Lecture (2Hrs), Chronic Health Lecture (2Hrs), Anatomy and Physiology Workshop and Chronic Health Workshop in the afternoons.

On Thursdays we have an Older Clients Lecture (2Hrs), Fundamentals of Nursing Lecture (2Hrs) and Law and Ethics Lecture (2Hrs).

On Fridays we have Communications, Law and Ethics Workshop, Older Clients Workshop and then 3 hours of Practical Nursing, where we learn our Nursing Skills.

So thats the timetable for semester 1 at GCIT.

Ok so here I am going along fine and then bam, my oldest son gets Cancer (Hodgkins Lymphoma) and because he has been so sick, I have missed a few major lectures of A and P and Chronic.

So I have had to defer those subjects to the July intake Semester 1 at GCIT. It puts me technically 6 months behind everyone from my semester 1 group. It kinda sucks, but hey the workload is HUGE! and I have kids and a very sick child, so Im doing myself a favor and hey whats 6 months really.

So anyone who is starting in July, come and say hi.

Cheers Wolfette

Hi Wolfette

Thanks for your reply. Am really sorry to hear about your children may they get better.

You will do well in your course when you start up again. Did you find it over whelming to start of, I do not want to make an idiot of myself and not pass, years since I have been studying.

Did you get many assignments during the first semester??

Hi Soph,

Yeah the course can be over whelming, but pace yourself and you will do well. One thing I do advise is do your assignments straight away and try to hand them in early. Research Research Research!. Dont skip classes either, it can be hard to catch up on what has been said in class. The Anatomy and Chronic exams are big so study up huge on those ones. You will get about 2 weeks warning before they happen, so really study for them. Because if you dont pass these exams, you wont do your Osca's and wont be able to go out on Clinical Placement and will have to repeat those classes, like what I am doing. But I didnt fail, Im just defering. Well good luck and have fun! Causes Nurses are the best, They Have Big Hearts.

Soph,

About the assignments.

We had 2 for Fundamentals, 1 for Law and Ethics, 1 for Older Clients, 2 for Communications actually 3 hand-ins, but 1 assignment is split into 2 segments.

And then the biggies for Anatomy there are three in-class quizzes and 1 for Chronic.

Make sure you utelise the library at Southport as they have a good selection of Nursing Text books.

Anything else you need, dont hesitate to ask me.

Wolfette :)

Can anyone please help ressure me ,i would not say im very up there with being clever but i do know i will try and find out what information they will want from me and put 100 percent into all that i do ,i suppose i just dont know how to do assignments and have just got to the point that the worring is starting to take over from me .
Please can someone help me

Hi Heidi,

Don't stress too much hun. The teachers are really great and they will do all they can to help you. I was kinda like that too, stressing about the assignmnets and all. But If you get them done on time and use your class notes to help you research you will be fine.

If you need anything, just ask. I'll be there in July as well.

Cheers Wolfette :)

Nurse Casey

DOnt worry about the workload, you will be able to handle it as long as you prioritise and start things when you recieve them. The teachers are really supportive at my tafe, I am sure they would be in all the schools. They understand that for us mature age students its been a while and there is lots of support out there so take advantage of it.

You will do great I am sure.

Hi Heidi,

Try not to stress, the teachers at southport are really great and are there to help you anytime you need it. The first semester can be difficult and there is a lot of work but as long as you start your assignments as soon as you get them you will be fine. If you can get through the first semester then believe me it does get easier. Not nearly as many assignments in semester two.

Just remember that everyone else will be feeling the same way. Everybody feels nervous and a little overwhelmed but once you start i am sure you will be great and you will love it.

Good Luck!!!
