Hi Brooklyn, Wow - the EN books sure are expensive! I had the same issue - I could not justify spending over $100 on an anatomy and physiology text book (Marieb). Firstly try the gumtree website (just google the state you are from followed by the word gumtree eg, Perth Gumtree) I have noticed a few people are selling their book through this website. I had problems with trying to get books as I wanted the latest editions. I did a google search and of course came across ebay (although many were still expensive). I noticed that there were books that were international books. At first I wouldn't even take a peak at them because I was scared that they would be different to the books bought over here. After still having problems trying to access the books, I eventually did another search about international version text books. What I found is that the ISB number and the picture on the front of the book are different - apart from this the text inside is identical! You will also notice that some sellers on ebay will post free to your state. I read one website where a lady said she got all her books from international sellers (international version text books) because it was a lot cheaper (You pay about 1/2 - 3/4 of the price of book that you would normally pay for in Australia).

Hi Mirabell, Hope u are well. As you know, we will be attending My Lawley Tafe. When do you think they will advise us what books to buy. Will it be on the 1st day of lectures - 27th July? Is there also a possibility that bookshops wont have stock. I thought maybe you will know which books to buy seeing that you have been down this road before.
Keep Well Yusra

Hi Yusra, Well, not long now - exciting hey? I think they will let us know of text books needed at the orientation next week. The bookshop use to be at Mt Lawley, but, having recently checked out their website, I now see we have to go to Perth TAFE for our bookshop - what a nuisance! If it's anything like it use to be, yes, there will be plenty of stock. I personally wouldn't rush to buy your books. One thing I noticed in '97 when I was there was that they told us to buy books - some of which I never even looked at! For example, the dictionary they told us to get didn't have all medical terms needed - I think I would have been better off buying Mosby's Medical Dictionary. There are books in the library and failing this, we are allowed to use UWA, Curtin, and ECUs libraries with the TAFE library card. One thing I noticed with borrowing books from Mt Lawley TAFE library is that it is difficult to borrow books when you need them most - eg, around exam time, so there are some books that I think are worth buying straight away. Tabbner's Nursing Care and Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology are both books that are needed and will be well used. I have notice anatomy and physiology are not on our timetable so, with all the changes to the course, perhaps this will come in 2nd semester - strange hey? What days are your orientation? Mine are Tuesday and Wednesday. Look forward to seeing you at TAFE.

Hi Yusra, I've heard that EN graduate programs are, in general, pretty easy to gain a place; just be sure to read all the specifications of the program before you apply and make sure you apply correctly. The graduate programs open pretty early in the year. If you want a grad program at somewhere like Princess Margaret Hospital (paediatrics) or King Edward Memorial Hospital (maternity) these can be a bit more challenging. I have heard mental health is the easiest are to be accepted into a graduate program. The following link has all the information you will need to apply: www.nursing.health.wa.gov.au/graduate/enrolled.cfm The graduate programs need to be applied for pretty early in the year, so, no, you are not thinking too far ahead - it is good to be organised :) If you go to the nursing link I put in above, then click on "Apply here for Enrolled Nurse graduate programs", then click on the link that will take you to application instructions, you will see that applications for all 2010 Enrolled Nurse graduate programs, including mid year intake, have already closed! So I would think that if you are planning on doing a graduate program, you will need to be looking into it at the end of this year, and at the latest, by the middle on next year (2010). I am uncertain if I will be applying for a graduate program; I most likely will however I will definitely go on to study RN externally through Charles Darwin University. ECU use to allow ENs to complete the course over 2 years and doing 16 units; they have since changed and it is now over 3 years. I had a look around and Charles Darwin seems to be a good option for me at present. What area would you like to go into once you have finished EN? I am very excited about finally returning to what I love most, I am grateful that God has got me this far. We may end up in the same class in semester 2 but I am sure I will see you around TAFE. Keep in touch, I'd love to know how things go for you. Mirabell

Hi Brooklyn & Michelle, I got most of my uni books for Feb from www.textbookexchange.com.au and ebay. Over all I saved about 40-50% and they are all in great condition so it might be worth you having a look... Cheers, Ian.

You can also obtain these textbooks from medical and nursing students at hospitals, especially those hard to get ones.
I picked two of mine up from the Royal Brisbane having spotted a notice posted outside their bookstore. I saved about $200.
