Hi there,

I sat the Vetassess exam about 4 weeks ago . The exam consists of 40 maths questions all multiple choice. They cover fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, addition, subtraction, multiplication etc.. metric conversions, graphs, a little bit of algebra( where you need to find x ) and some drug calculations. there are heaps of websites to help with all of these. The literacy was also multiple choice and consisted of 40 words where you circled the meaning or correct spelling. there was also an article you had to read and answer comprehension questions. Then there were 2 essays about a page long you had to write. The topics were given. eg.If you were confined to a bed what qualities would you like the nurse taking care of you to have? Lastly there was a nursing questionaire to answer which there was no right or wrong answer. I'm still not sure what the point of that was! Also the time goes really quickly so try not to spend too much time on each question, I didn't get all my maths questions finished. Anyway i hope this gives you a bit of an idea. Good Luck!! Megan

Hi! Megan

Thanks for your help. It was very useful to me. So do you think the exam was hard or easy? By the way, when will you start your course? Which Uni or Tafe will you go to?

Hey,

I think the exam was a little harder than their sample exam and I know other people think otherwise. As I said earlier I didn't get all my maths questions finished in the time frame so I don't think I will actually get offered a place as they were taking the top 50 highest marks out of approx 300 people who also sat the exam and my score wont be high enough. I found this frustrating as I knew the work but I was just too slow!! Anyway That was through Chisholm ( TAFE ) and I haven't heard back from them yet. I have also applied to another provider Healthtrain and got 94% on their exam and have an interview with them next week so I will see how that goes. Basically Div 2 is pretty hard to get into and I would recommend applying to wherever you can. I hope this helps some.

Where have you applied? when is your exam? Let me know if I can help with anything else!! Megan

Hi! Megan

You mentioned 50 out of 300 is only the requirement of the Chisholm Tafe only, isn't it? I applied at RMIT bundoora in early May and I will sit in the Vetassess test on the 18 May, I'm so nervous, but it's good to know more details from u, I think I should apply at a few more Tafe institutions and see which one I can get into. (If I can pass the test) Also, I applied for Certificate IV in Disability Work at Preston Campus last month, i don't need to do a test, but they still don't know if they've got enough people enrolled. So I changed my mind to apply for the Nursing course, if I don't pass, I don't know of any other way that I can get into that course. But I saw one Tafe they can accept ILETS test, something like TOFEL, you have to get 6.0 (score) in Academic, it still hard though.

By the way, I wish u good luck with your interview, maybe I should apply trainhealth as well.

Hi there!

The 50 out of approx 300 was for Chisholm Berwick and Frankston. ( They were taking 25 for each campus ) I don't really know what the other Tafe institutes are like and if they also have heaps of people apply. I would apply to as many Tafe places as you can but keep in mind that you can only sit the vetassess exam once every 3 months. So if you don't go as well as you would like you are stuck with that score until you can resit another one, does that make sense? Good Luck with your test, let me know how you go!! Megan

Hi! Megan

How are you going? How's your interview at Health Train? I did rang up RMIT few days ago, they told me the nursing course they will take 30 people out of 900 application, they said even you pass Vetassess is not mean that you can get in. So I just get frastrated. I know some of school which are not sponsored by the Government, maybe it will be easier to get in but it cost a lot of money, so I don't know what to do. Anyway, I will sit in my exam next Monday, I'm worry about more literacy than numbercy because I'm Chinese. Well, looking for your reply and have a good day.

Hey there,

30 out of 900!!! That's unbelievable! It is frustrating and you wonder why so few places are offered when there is such a shortage of nurses! Chisholm was the same with the exam, just because you passed doesn't necessarily mean you will get in you need a really high score. I'm still waiting to hear from Chisholm it's been 5 weeks!!. My interview with healthtrain is on Friday so I'll let you know how it goes. My Fingers are crossed!!

Try not to worry too much about the literacy it's fairly straight forward and no real tricky questions.I'm sure you can google practice literacy questions, I know I had a bit of a look but I can't remember what sites I looked at.Anyway I hope all goes well on Monday, let me know! Megan

Hi! Megan

I think my english part is not doing too good, the maths part I have confident in first 20 questions, but I run out of time of the last 10 questions, I have to rush it in 5 mins, so it's a bit crap. I write a letter to a friend stop smoking, another one is something about competition and cooperative, last one is write about why you want to be a nurse. You know after each part you can't go back to check, you can check the one that they ask you to do, but not the other one, it's seems pretty strick, I don't have much confident about that. Do you know how is the score calculate with the 3 essays? Also, I try health train, they said they don't have course coming up, they are waiting for the government funding, so you are so lucky to get in. On the other hand, I apply Mayfield education, if my result have 65% in each section, I can use it for Mayfield application, but if my score is crap, I have to sit in their test which I just book in 3/6/2009, on the same day of information session I have to do the test again. I get frastrated about get into this course, it is very hard though. Do you know anywhere that I can try to apply within June still?

Hey,

I too ran out of time for the test! I didn't know that you couldn't go back after each section until i was sitting there.

With the essays they just mark them satisfactory or not. They mark the maths out of 40 and literacy out of 40.So tour total score will be out of 80.

i actually got my results for Chisholm Tafe today and I didn't get in. I wont know for 2 weeks if I got into Healthtrain. It seems to be almost impossible to get into the Div2. I don't know of anywhere else you can apply for Div 2 for July intake.I was just going to reapply next year if it doesn't work out this time.

Don't give up, it will work out!!

Hi! Megan

I found one school which call CTA care training Australia, it will charge you full fee about $11,500, but you can pay instalement, it is so expensvie, but I think maybe it is a little easier to get in because you pay lots of money. Of course I don't want to pay that much, but it is the other way in. Also, it can finish in 18 months because you have to go to school 3 days a week, so I think it I have to get in, I have to quit my present job or change it to part-time job. Well! I don't know. I just don't understand why it is so hard to get it. It pissed me off.

Hi there,

I have heard of CTA but it is a lot of money!! I got my letter from Healthtrain yesterday and got in for July intake. I know they will do a February intake, could you possibly wait until then? I've had a really lovely experience with them so far and they are very supportive. I think a lot of places are probably not doing anymore intakes until February now. Don't give up you may need to be patient and try for a whole heap of places next year. Good Luck with whatever you decide!!

hi guys!

im almost finished my cert. iv in nursing in about 3 weeks (i was a july 08 intake), studying out of the frankston campus of chisholm institute. i too had to do the vetassess exam, in which i was one off the lucky 50 out of the 300+ which enrolled. on my exam which i did in march 08 i didnt find it hard there were a few tricky questions but i thought that the sample questions provided by vetassess was quiet helpful.

my marks which i got to get in were

literature - 37/40

math - 32/40

the course was very full on to say the least, i had 4 exams last week! and the week before that i had the lab medications exam!

but in the end it was really worth it!

during the medication module, there is a calculations exam in which you have 30 minutes to do 10 medications calculations in which you must get 100% or else you fail.. but my class all passed :)

hopefully next time you get in! cos chisholm was lovely and has a very supporting nursing teaching team!

- finah.

Hey Finah,

good to hear you have been enjoying Chisholm. I start Div 2 at Healthtrain at the end of June. What are your plans when you finish up, will you do a grad program? Do you have a specific area you want to work in? Would like to hear about your plans. I'm looking forward to starting but am scared to death as well, not sure I know what I'm getting myself into!!! I hope the next few weeks are enjoyable, good luck!
