Hello to all. I am currently an administration assistant within a school environment working in a counselling and careers office. I would like to combine the skills and qualifications I currently have and make a career change either to nursing or allied health industry. After researching courses and jobs I became more aware that I would like to do a Diploma of Nursing. However, from reading the forums I get the impression that most people who are studying this course are already working within the industry. I was just wondering can anybody tell me how did you get into the industry to start with? How can I study a Diploma of Nursing whilst working 5 days a week and juggling schooling etc with two children. I am very passionate about helping and caring for people and am very keen to obtain a position within this field. Can anybody give me any advice on where to start or where to go from here? I eagerly await your feedback!! Many thanks. J10

Hi there ,
You don't need experience in the industry or need to be working in the industry. I dont and have recently been accepted into cert IV nursing which at the end will give me an option of doing diploma. I start in july. You can apply through at TAFE or a nursing college but first you may need to sit a vetassess . You can also study part time which is about 1 day a week over 2 years. Hope this helps.

Hi Jadedoo, thanks heaps for your reply. What is CDU? I live just west of Brisbane. Is CDU in Qld? Thanks for the note on prior learning and education. That could help me as I'm 42. I'm looking forward to getting into the Nursing field. Appreciate your reply. J10.

Trishy67 - Charles Darwin University offers external/open learning courses. I know of lots of students who are already working, signing up to gain their nursing degrees through CDU. They do work placements in hospitals within Brisbane just as any other students. I think that's what Jadedoo is refering to for J10. Go for it J10, you can do it. I am northwest of Brisbane, juggled school with 4 kids, a part time business, part time work as a researcher for QUT and I am OLD...lol. I just tend to miss lectures and tutorials where I can afford to skip and study from home after downloading the lecture notes and sometimes (rarely) post lecture podcast. Wishing you all the best J10.

Hi J10, I am currently working full-time and study full-time in the Diploma of Nursing - Online through Gold Coast Tafe. I also have 3 kids. I don't work in the health industry at all and have been working as a finance/accountant roles for 15 years, have decided to have a change. (big change). I know that with GCIT there maybe another intake mid-year, I guess you would have look it up. I live in North Qld and you being in Brisbane would be a whole deal closer. There are Residential Schools that you have to attend and placement needs to be completed. However other than that everything else is done online. I am finding it full on (studying full-time), but am enjoying it. Worth a look if you are serious about making the change.

update #1
For those wishing to do externally, BE ABSOLUTELY certain that your institute can arrange clinical placements for you!!! Big Universities have a strangle hold on teaching hospitals thus leaving very few places for other institutes to position their students. If you cannot get into hospitals for pracs and end up in a nursing home, your learning experience can be compromised. I guess you guys have not heard of nightmares where Unis have difficulty placing students, so I encourage you to check things out carefully. Good luck everyone
