I am already doing my diploma through GCIT, kell85. I started online in November. I too am a mature age student. I am 41 though with 6 kids so it has been a long time since I studied. I found it really challenging to teach myself how to learn when I started but I loved it on the first day and I am still loving it! At times I find doing it online tough. Juggling everything and not knowing if what I am doing is the right thing or enough but every time I start a new topic I get a buzz out of the new information. Good Luck and enjoy!

I am just about to start online at GCIT in March. I am 44 with two kids and havent been close to a real classroom since 1987. I am currently working in a busy public hospital dealing with the seedier side of hospital life.

Hi jojo, Welcome and looking forward to meeting you. I have wanted to do this course also for the last 30 years and I am finally doing it now so I am very excited also. All tafes do require you to do residential school to ensure we are competent and are assessed on our practical knowledge that we are learning through the course. I think though we only attend 3 times during the 3 semesters we are there. Looking forward to meet you :-)

Hey Crissydoll, nice to meet you too..Well i guess we have to September to save up to get to the coast..Hopefully by then my daughter who has just graduated and is now a flight attendant for Jetstar can get some cheap flights, as i might as well make the most of the coast and bring the hubby and our son..This place is a great idea, great to meet newbies and also to help each other out if we get stuck on anything...Be good to put faces to names later on down the track..

Just to add to my previous post.. Im really hoping that its not the part time 'online' course thru GCIT that costs $15,000 :( That is just ridiculous fee's, cannot afford that at all !

Hi Everyone I'm looking at enrolling in this course and just wondered what everyone thinks of it now that it has officially started last month. I'm looking at the August intake - just waiting for the Residential schools information to come through before they release it. Did you guys have any trouble enrolling? I am also mature age (45) with 3 kids - all older teens now. I have always wanted to be a nurse since my teens and I have decided to jump in and do something about it. At the moment I am working as a teacher aide!! I'm looking at the part time online option (24mths) Elaine

Hi Lainey I am 48 years old and a single mum and work fulltime. I just started this course in March part time through GCIT. I tell you the hardest thing to get used to is the studying again. I found that I need to organise myself really well, so when i get home from work, tea is pretty much prepeared and i start studying between 5 and 5.30pm and do so until 7.30pm at night when my teen is stuyding as well. I wont lie to you and tell you it wasnt easy at the start but 4 weeks in i am loving it and am so glad to be doing it now that i am in the swing of it. I wouldnt change it for anything in the world, its so interesting and there isnt anything i would change about it. Like you, nursing has been my dream since i was a teen so i can highly recommend this course to you. You will love it...

Hi Chrissydoll Thanks for the reply:) I must admit I am getting excited about enrolling now! Did you have any trouble getting in? It says there are limited places so I'm worried I'll miss out! Like you, I think once I get myself organized into a routine studying I'll be right. At present I work mon - Thurs 8.30 to 3.00pm as a teacher aide. I'm looking at the part time option as I can't afford to give up work.

I feel your pain lainey, but from just chatting to you a couple of times u know what you will breeze it. You are a teachers aide so you are already organised, just have to get the home part of it out of the way like dinner , homework with the kids, and dedicate 2 or 3 hours a weeknight to studying and doing the online lessons and reading. I also study on the weekend, full on when we have a quiz but just about 4 hours sat or sun. You will know what you need and what you can do, you will love it. I heard also it was hard to get in but i did not have any problems, I know from some emails and notices we have been getting there are about 200 students at the moment studying Dip of Nursing. I dont think you will have a problem. I went to the site, clicked on the course and down on the page somewhere there is an expression of interest. If you sign up to that they will send you the information by email, thats how i did it, but i still checked online also so i didnt miss out, but they are on the ball and will let you know asap and once you get all the notifications be sure to get all your documentation in order. If you like i can send you offline the email with all the stuff they sent to me. PM me your personal email address and hopefully this gives you the heads up. The staff at GCIT are great! especially Melinda Fertsz, nothing is too much trouble for her and she goes out of her way to help you, they are all great. Regards Sandra

Hi Crissydoll and Lainey, I am also P/T at GCIT. Very similar situations 3 boys, one started High School, one started school and one in the middle this year. I am a young 41 and also woking part time. I have always wanted to be a nurse and thought it was about time to do something I am very passionate about. I am absolutley loving it! I agree with you Chrissydoll it is a full on workload and you need to be organised, but when you are doing something that interests you it seems to be a lot easier. Go for it Lainey, I am sure you won't regret it!!!! The Anatomy and Physiology teacher I have is fantastic!! Melinda was extremely helpful also. Everyone seems to be very helpful. What group are you in Chrissydoll? I'm in Group J P/T1.
