ok, so im trying to think laterally at options to try and get in to Div 2/En nursing..

ive never wanted to do a traineeship- mostly for the financial reasons- as they dont pay much and usually seem to span out over 2yrs- which is a long time to take a massive pay cut and earn the wage of a 15yr old! however...its becoming glareingly obvious that getting into a TAFE on my side of town is looking exceptionally difficult.

however, i noticed on a website that was talking about traineeships that you apparently only have to work a minimum of 13hrs per week (at a facility) to qualify for traineeship. if that equates to say around 2 days per week.. then ive decided that i could probably try and make it work for the sake of just getting into the course.

so i just have a couple of questions, and am wondering if anyone can answer any of them!

**has anyone done a traineeship in rehab? i know they can be done in acute and aged care

**has anyone done a traineeship in a hostel? (as opposed to a nursing home)

**does anyone know of a hostel in melbournes northern/north western suburbs that has a good reputation and is a good place to work? ive worked in aged care before and am well aware that some places are great to work.. and others leave alot to be desired. am trying to come up with some facilities that i could possibly approach.

**can you contact a facility and see if they will do a traineeship... and then find an education provider? can it work that way?? im pretty sure you can

**personal question- but for anyone doing or who has done a traineeship and who is happy to answer- what kind of wage were you being paid? ive tried to find this info on the internet but no luck so far.

thanks for any info

Hi Jules74,

I am currently in a traineeship position and as an adult am earning $13.68 an hour going up to $14 something next year (second year). Are you in Melbourne? If so contact Apprenticeships plus, they do all the leg work for you, employer, training provider etc.

I'm not sure what your situation is but I survive on the low wage. I have three kids under 4 and a mortgage and husband and we make do. I only work two days a week and go to Uni one day a week (you get paid for Uni day too).

Anyway, hope that helps,

Melissa

Hi all,

How is the workload @ uni?
Are you doing it at the city camous or Bundoora?

Is your facility o.k with just working the two days a week?

thanks Melissa, i am in Melbourne. i will definitely look into apprentiseships plus. i have contacted a hospital and surprisingly found that they offer traineeships also. which is really really appealing bcos id rather do an acute traineeship than one in aged care (i worked in aged care for 2 yrs and so would just rather do acute instead). however, it would depend on how many days per week were involved. i could quite likely get by if it was 3 days per week like you are doing. bcos then i could still work 2 days elsewhere also.

its all food for thought anyway!

Hi can i ask which Hospital is offering traineeships? I am doing mine at Mayfield education and work in aged care i get paid $17.11 per hour but i dont get paid for school. It only has to be a total of 13 hours including your class time so you can pretty much get away with a 5 shift. Hope that is some help
