Quick question - I've spoken to my local Tafe (CY O'Conner - wheatbelt WA) and they say I have a place for EN next year - but they are very ... relaxed ... about paperwork and so if I 'haven't heard from them by the end of Jan give them a ring' but otherwise they are sending me out all the enrolment stuff etc in Jan.

What I don't understand is that the website is quoting fees based on how many hours the course takes (most of it is external with a few days at most of in room contact time per unit, specifically all bunched together because we will all be spread all over the wheatbelt) and amounts to about $1k in fees - but people on here are talking about the fees being $10k + ...

So is there still some 'low cost' places for people who live in remote areas (I'm 200km from Perth, not exactly remote, but certainly an area that needs nurses)... who will get regular Tafe fees? Or will I be hit for $10k in Jan?

Hi "snuck",

I am currently studying EN at TAFE in Perth, WA. The fees are dependent on whether you are an Australian Citizen or not. If you are an international student - yes, the fees are around $10 000. If you are an AC, the fees are around $800 for the first semester (excluding books) and around $500 if you have some kind of pensioner or concession card. I think next semester it will be less because we do less units - the heaviest semester is semester 1 - which is full time. I've never heard EN being able to be done externally - I know CY O'Conner has internal places for EN but have not heard of external EN, especially since a lot of the labs have to be done hands on. Hope this helps some. All the best with your studies.

Regards,

Thanks Mirrabell,

I actually spoke to the person the other day and she's confirming info and leaving it for me at the telecentre on Thursday - but she's said similar to you - I am an aussie citizen :) I was a bit scared of some of the EN fees I was seeing quoted over east here on this forum!

CY O'Connor intensifies the labs into two and three day extraveganzas every so often - so you don't actually attend every day for a few hours, but a few days every so often (they usually run the labs for units over a few days, for a few units) - this is what I've been told. My nearest town that will have the labs is well over 100km away... so this is how they'll get around the distance. We self study, lots of assignments etc... and maxi-lab I guess. I'll know more on Thursday hopefully. This will work well for us, because my partner is part of a series of businesses across the wheatbelt, and we travel back and forth to Perth and all over the shop a lot, so I can plan the travel in around the labs, and study while he is doing 'man things' in big sheds :)

(oh, and I was online now, so thought I'd reply quick smart - stalkerific :P)

Howdy,

People who have mentioned the high EN course fees are correct, but how the fees apply is different for different people! For example, if you are an Aussie Citizen with limited existing qualifications then you may qualify for most of the fees to be covered so it will only cost $800 or something similar, whereas for me - I am an Aussie Citizen but I already have a degree in a different disciplin gained in the UK, so am liable for full fees, which at Chisholm TAFE is about $14000. Bizarely, it is cheaper for me to do a 2 year Master of Nursing to become a RN than to do an 18 month Diploma to become an EN!!

My advise is to check what the fees might be and how they apply to you. At least that way there are no nasty suprises, and don't forget that you should be able to borrow the full course fees from the government if you need to.

Cheers,
Ian.
