Hi there,

I have been accepted into a Diploma of Nursing program, starting January 11th 2010. I am very excited but have a couple of questions.

For anyone doing the course at the moment you might be able to help me.

I was wondering if on the program I will learn things such as Catherterising, Putting in an IV Line, Putting in an NG Tube, etc. I know I will learn many skills but I wondered if I will learn these.

Thanks for your help

Danielle

Hi Ian,

I was going to be studying at Careers Australia at Fortitude Valley. I had been accepted and it was all going to plan. It sounded fantastic. They actually have a type of HECS program called VET FEE HELP. You don't need to pay any fees until you are earning over $34,000. I was really happy with the service up till this point.

To tell you the truth the only reason I am not doing the Diploma now is because I have completed an enabling program called WIST (Woment Into Science and Technology) through the CQUniversity which gives me Direct Entry into the program of my choice ie. Bachelor of Nursing Program.

My ultimate aim was to become a registered nurse and go through the university system anyway. So this kind of works better for me.

I start in March and am very excited and very much looking forward to it.

Hey, I wanted to ask you.....where-a-bout's are you? Are you in Brisbane? Careers Australia might be an option for you. They have places available for the January intake. You said that you had applied everywhere, all I had to do was have a phone interview with the Head of college. I am currently living in Bundaberg. I would have had to moved to Brisbane for the duration of the course.....Just a thought!!!

Anyway, best of luck

Kind Regards

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

I am near Melbourne so have applied to Melbourne Uni for Masters Degree, ACU, Holmsglen Tafe & Deakin for Bachelors Degree, La Trobe & CSU in Albury NSW for Bachelors Degree, Chilsholm Tafe for Diploma, and Uni-SA & CSU in NT for distance Bachelors Degree. I figure somebody will take pity and offer me a place! but if all else fails then I will probably apply to Goldcoast Tafe for distance Enrolled Nursing, but hopefully it won't come to that and I don't really want to move too far interstate.

Best of luck to you too. I'm sure your course will be great when it starts :)

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Danielle,

Congrats on your acceptance into the course. Yes you will learn catheterisation but it will be limited to IDC (Indwelling catheters - insertion of catheters into the urinary tract) but NOT intubation. Puting an IV line - I assume you mean cannulation : Insertion of IV cannula is something you can opt to learn and be certified on the job but NOT in your clinical placements be it TAFE or UNI Not all RNs can or allowed to cannulate, they must be certified.

Insertion of Nasograstric tube - yes again but for adults. You would also be taught the different Oxygen deliverysystems from nasal prongs to masks like the hudson and rebreathers - when to use them. I am certain you will enjoy your studies and placements.

All the best - Schizo

Hi Schizo,

Thank you for your comments, Yes......I am really looking forward to my studies. I start in March and I am so excited. I can't wait to learn all of these types of procedures like the catheters, IV canulers, wound dressings, NG tubes etc. etc. There is so much to learn.

I have opted to do my degree over 4 years instead of the 3 years that students would normally do it in. CQUni is really flexible this way. I will be doing 3 courses per semester instead of 4. I think it is still classed as full-time, just a reduced load! I think it will work much better for me as I won't have just quite as much work bombarding me.

I am just waiting on my offer letter to arrive in the next few weeks along with the enrolment package. Then I can enrol in my subjects, buy my textbooks, read the subject profiles, and whatever else I need to do. I guess there will be a lot more than that......I will learn in a very short amount of time.

It's all going to be a road of discovery for me and one I am looking forward to going down.

I hope that all you new Nursing students out there are as excited as I am. It's not long to go now.....

Bye for now.........Danielle

Hi Danielle my name is Grace and I am in Adelaide.I am just about finshed my diploma,I am due to go on my acute placement for 6wks which I am really looking forward to.I can tell you now that there is alot of written work to get through but you do get to do catheters on a femaile not a male that is an RN duty also you do NG feed on an adult and the IV line is like schizo said an elective you learn the basics of IV I am not sure how it differs with roles of an EN from state to state.I have done my diploma with TafeSA which I throughly enjoyed and I get direct entry to Uni for next year for RN I am 43 with 3 kids 10,7,5 and I managed to get what had to be done, done anyway good luck for next year Grace in Adelaide

Hi Gracie,

It sounds like you can do a lot more as an EEN than I thought you could do.

Congratulations for getting to the point in the course that you have. I bet you are so happy to be nearly finished? You said that you wanted to do the RN degree next, which UNI were you planning to go to?? Flinders, Adelaide Uni?? I know Adelaide well.....I am originally from Adelaide. I now live in Bundaberg.

I am lucky I guess. I have completed an enabling program called WIST (Women into Science and Technology) over the last 6 months. It was done through the CQUniversity at home self-paced and I am proud to say I have just completed it. With the WIST program I am able to have Direct Entry into B.Nursing.

I am super excited. I am waiting for the course profiles to come out on the Uni website so that I can start going through them and preparing for the semester. You can call me a bit eager if you like. LOL

I am not looking forward to the expense of all the textbooks and extras I will need to purchace for the year, but I guess it is a neccessity that we will all have to live with.

Bye for now

Danielle
