Hi there, I am considering studying to be a midwife. I am currently living in Bendigo and La Trobe, our university here does not offer a midwife course so I want to apply to do a Bachelor of Nursing and become a registerd nurse and then do a year of distance education through Charles Sturt University. Can someone please tell me how hard it is to get into a general nursing course as a mature student? I am 31, completed my VCE in 1995 with a TER of 67 and have also completed a number of science and health subjects as part of a Naturopath couse I studied but did not complete a few years a go.
Many thanks
Kerry

It's probably best that you approach La Trobe and talk to someone there about prerequisites for studying nursing there.

If you don't get into La Trobe, another pathway to consider is to complete a cert IV of nursing through your local TAFE, and then do a Bachelor of Nursing via distance education. However, it is very competitive to get into a cert IV course. Having a Cert III in aged care/community may help, but is no guarantee.

I guess the best thing I can tell you is that there are a lot of mature aged people studying nursing, and if it was that hard to get in as a mature aged student, they wouldn't be there :)

OK thanks for your advice. I think you're right. I will speak to Latrobe soon and see what my chances are.

I beleive you will need to sit a STAT test to get into the bachelor of nursing as a mature age student. I got accepted into the cert IV in nursing at VU this year. To get into cert IV you need to sit a VETASSES test which is a combination of maths and english multiple choice questions.
I think if you are really motivated and wanting to go forward with this you will get there.

Best of luck with your studies.

Thanks for the info Tracey,

I've since learnt about the STAT test too. Latrobe said I need to sit this. I have practiced with some of the sample questions on the web. There not too bad.

Do you think the STAT would be the only factor that they take into consideration? The person I spoke to at Latrobe said study I had done in the past would not be a factor but I find that hard to believe considering I did my VCE so long a go. I thought they would want me to show other experience and study. Did you have to list your other experience/study if any when you applied for your vu course?

Is the Cert IV course that you are studying the same as a Bachelor of nursing? Are you a registered nurse when finished?

Best of luck with your studies too. :)

Im going through the application process at the moment, but through SATAC to get into CDU. I completed my HSC in 2000 and got 59.34, just below their cut off of 60.

For Mature age they take more notice of other factors such as STAT, personal statement and other courses you have done since school. Have a look at the course admissions details and also VTAC and see what requirements they list.

From memory CDU list (for mature age) the admission requires as STAT - desirable, Personal Statement - recommended, Work Experiance/other education (tafe etc) - recommended.
