Hi guys,

I just had a few questions, and hopefully you all can help me out.

1.) Well I know the difference between RN and PN. And I know that if you're going into nursing you have to expect some things that will be coming in your way. Such as even if u are a RN (BscN) you will still have to sometimes clean the bedpan and things like that. Is that true? Can anyone answer this from experience?

2.) What about if one is planning to get a masters in nursing. Would duties such as cleaning the bedpan still be involved in the work of a nurse who holds a masters degree?

3.) And how does one become or go into pediatric nursing? After doing 4 years, one can specialize in pediatric, right?

Thanks in advance!!!

Meg!

Hi, its great that you are thinking about the future. Nursing involves looking after people and their family when they are at their most vulnerable, and bedpans play a big part!

A really good series about nursing, its called nurse tv www.nursetv.com.au

A really good website for you to get more information about becoming a nurse http://nurseinfo.com.au/becoming

Have a read through the message boards here to get more of an idea of what it is like to be a nursing student and a graduate nurse, and try and get some work experience with healthcare organisations, St Johns ambulance is a good place to start.

If you go on and get a Masters Degree then you generally go into management, research or education, and you may not have to deal with bedpans.

If you are interested in pediatric nursing, then you can apply to do your grad year in a pediatric hospital and start to specialise straight away, or you can do post graduate study and specialise at a later stage.
