Hii am a mature student (40s) with 3 kids under 7. I have just started a Degree in Nursing partime. I would love to have part time work preferably in nursing environment. What is the best way? I cant see myself employable having no previous nirsing experience? Is it worthwhile getting a cert 3 in aged care or disability care so i can get paid work? Please help not sure what to do, thanks.

Hello

I suggest you can start working in a your own community as a volunteer nurse . You can gain experience

and widen your knowledge.  Community nurses play a important role in helping to create optimal outcomes for all patients

Hi Twinkle12,

it might be tough until after you've done your first placement. That's likely to be in a nursing home, so when you're there tell people you're looking for work and ask if they're hiring. That's your best shot, because they get to see you work and get to know you a bit. Once you've worked in the nursing home for a bit you have a better chance at AIN work in hospital. That's what I've done  :)

Hope that helps!

cheers, ratty

Getting a cert 3 is a great idea - it will give you the certification necessary to work in a retirement home.  You'll learn a lot through the program that will also be useful to you as a nurse. The program has a practice placement at the end - so you might be able to make connections to get your part-time job.  I can imagine with kids at home you don't have a lot of extra time on your hands, so making your way to a paid position is important.  Good luck!
