Hi All

Congrats on commencing your grad year!

For those of you that are still trying to secure a position dont give up! Grads drop out of positions all the time and those positions then become available. Unfortunately these positions are not always advertised so your best bet is too keep bugging the hospitals that your interested in and make yourself known. Also if you managed to secure interviews but didn't recieve a position find out why! It may be something really simple and a quick phone call to your interviewer can help you better prepare for your next one.

For those of you about to commence your GNP's I bet you're all feeling very excited and nervous but you will be fine! You are not expected to know everything but know where to find out aka know your resources. Other nurses, allied health, your patients, mims, IV drug administration books, policies, protocols and the internet are all there for you to access. No question is stupid and no one should EVER make you feel stupid for asking ok! Nurses are very good are looking after their patients but not so good at looking after other nurses. If you are not getting the support you need talk to your grad coodinator or educator- after all it's their job is too look after you!

Good luck and feel free to tell me about your experiences or ask a question. Ill be checking this website almost daily. You are the future of the profession and you deserve to be nurtured and respected - remember that!

Hi there,

I am currently a 3rd year nursing student in New Zealand. I am looking to move over to Melbourne next year and get on a new grad program. I am wondering how I should go about this and what to expect from interviews etc. Also is it difficult to get a new grad program?? Is there limited positions?

Love to hear back from you,

Thanks

Hi Melissa

My advice to you is to contact the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria who run a 'computer matching' program for the majority of public and private hospitals in Victoria. They do have restrictions on temporary residents but I think NZ may be different to some of our Asian neighbours. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

www.pmcv.com.au

Otherwise the few places that don't go through the matching process will advertise via the usual methods i.e. local newspapers or more apporporiately for you whilst your sill in NZ internet job/career sites.

Try
www.seek.com.au
www.carreerone.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au
www.health.vic.gov.au/jobs/index.htm (the government site)

Good luck!

Another option is to go for rural programs. I didn't have much luck with the larger programs in the city, they can be very competitive, so I chose to live in a large town in Vic, only 2 hours from Melbourne and it is a great program, and I know some of the surrounding towns and health services were looking to expand their programs to accommodate a larger number of new grads.
