Did anyone go straight from uni without doing a grad programme first? Just wondering how you are finding it. I am a programme with supportive ward and clinical staff, and I know there are days when I just feel like walking out despite their help.

Hello Tropicana

I never completed my grad program, I did one month of it! It's a matter of what interests you really. If you want to do ICU, or emergency, I'd recommend one. But I went back to aged care, so it didn't matter much to me (no matter what the old school nurses say, I never felt the need to devote myself to general nursing for any length of time!).

They don't tell you 2 things about graduate programs:

(1) You continue coursework (yes, assignments!).

(2) You have your first 3 years to commence a program (ie you don't have to do it straight out of uni, you can delay, or do 3 different ones if you so wish).

Hope that helps!

I am about to graduate this year, and am worried at the moment about not getting a grad program. They tell us though if we dont get an offer of a grad program, you can still work as an RN. EG if you want to really get a job in say ER, but didnt get a grad program in ER,you can apply for a job in the ER still.

THough with paediatrics, which is what I really want to get into, they do a lot of useful education so yes Id love to do a paediatric grad program.

Though while I'm waiting for the grad program to start, as soon as QUT sends off the graduate list, I will apply to get my registration ASAP and just work for a month or so at the nursing home I work at now as an AIN.

Ive applied for Mater Private (didnt get it coz they did it in large group interviews, and too few places), St Andrews WMH-havent heard back, the person said they were off sick and as a result wasnt able to get in touch with my referees, but said I did a really good job, and then I had an interview at Wesley on Wednesday and hope to hear back from them next week sometime. I really want to work at the Welsey or Mater.

Havent heard anything from Qld Health-applied for Royal Brisbane Childrens, Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital, and Prince Charles and Ipswich which would be hard to get to.

mmmmm i've heard mixed reviews about the mater interview process - they changed it this year (i just faced a panel last year)

as grad programs go, i do know of people who have been working as RN's without a program. However i would imagine it would be harder for them without the support that we have as grads (well i do anyway). I have at least 4 educators (3 of whom are grad only educators) who i can call on during the day and also a support network of other grads who know what i'm going through. Not to say that you can't cope without a program, you can still be an RN without a grad program and if you're in the right environment you can still benefit from education sessions.

Hi All

I'm new here, i heard from my friend that this is a really good site for informations and getting ideas from different nurses in the Australia.

I think everyone knows about the Computer match of Grad year was completed yesterday, sadly i was not matched, I was pretty disappointed, and kinda lost, didn't really know where to turn, kinda wasn't prepared for the result, thought i did pretty good at the interview so didn't doubt myself but i guess what is done is done. I was wondering has anyone didn't get matched? What are they plans? Is it a good idea to miss Grad Year? I only wanted a general hospital, so i can learn lots, i'm not specialised in anything yet so it doesn't bother me if don't get any specific area, i just wanted a Grad year. Please do reply if anyone has any advice or ideas for me.

Thanks

Liz

Perhaps wait till the 2nd round offers come around? Hopefuly then you'll get a job. Or you could try doing nursing home work for 6months and applying for a mid year grad program..that way you wont have to shower people for 6months lol.

I hope that you get a grad job! Its amazing that they say they need more nurses and yet a lot find it hard to get grad jobs. Did you only apply for a small number of hospitals or a lot?

hey there.

i'd say wait for second round offers - especially if you're after a generalised grad program. if nothing happens there, then maybe look to agency or nursing bank for a few months at a hospital until mid year grads start?

Does anyone know how hard it is to get into a paediatic grad program. Is there anything you can do while still studying to put yourself in a better position for an offer??? Ie work placement ???

hi everyone!

i have just joined this forum and iam not sure whether this is the right place to pose my question.

I have just completed a diploma in mental health in United kingdom december 2007,iam intending to move Victoria, melbourne. Will i be recruited as a Division 3 as mentioned by someone above or i have to go through the 1year grauate course??If so are there any other options of getting a job as a registered nurse, mental health without going through the gradute programme and what maybe the implications??

Thanks

Ring up the Victorian nursing registration board and ask them your question and they can help you.

Hi mckintosh145,

sorry, I don't always get a chance to read every post and just noticed you were looking for a response from me.

I am also not certain regarding what a Dip of Mental Health entitles you to with regards registration in Australia. If you are already a Registered Nurse, it may also entitle you to be registered as a Mental Health Nurse.

I would suggest you contact either the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council or the Board for whichever state you are interested in.

You will find their details on our links page to the Registration Boards.

Cheers
